Broncos rosterology: A first guess at the 53-man roster

With Broncos training camp over and two preseason games complete, we’re closing in on the first round of cuts (on Aug. 31) when the roster will go from 80 to 75, and we’re less than two weeks away from the major cuts, when the team will pick its 53-man roster.
Here’s how the Broncos roster looked at the end of the preseason last year: 3 quarterbacks, 4 running backs, 9 offensive linemen, 6 wide receivers, 3 tight ends; 7 defensive linemen, 9 linebackers (including Spencer Larsen), 4 cornerbacks, 5 safeties; and 3 specialists.
I don’t expect the breakdown to be too different this year, and I’ve used this as a guide for my prediction below.

Among the potential changes:
** Larsen is now officially a fullback so the team will have to decide whether to carry four tailbacks plus Larsen, or to have only three true tailbacks, with Larsen as the fourth member of that group.
** Last year the Broncos kept 4 corners and 5 safeties. I see the numbers being reversed this year. Nate Jones is a cornerback first, but he can play safety as well.
** Another issue for the team to address is what to do with Elvis Dumervil (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/elvis-dumervil/). By Sept. 4, he will be several weeks into his rehab following surgery to repair his torn pectoral muscle and the team should know if it is worth saving a spot on the 53-man roster for him on the chance he could return by late November.
So … here’s my preliminary guess at which players will make the 53-man roster. The key word here is “GUESS.” We can all come back here in 12 days and laugh and laugh about how wrong I was.
Note: I’m a little unsure of what Josh McDaniels (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/josh-mcdaniels/) will ultimately decide to do at running back and wide receiver, particularly. Special teams will play a big role in if the team keeps one fewer running back and an additional linebacker, for example.
QBs: Kyle Orton (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/kyle-orton/), Brady Quinn, Tim Tebow (3)
OL: Ts Ryan Clady, Ryan Harris, D’Anthony Batiste, Tyler Polumbus; Gs Chris Kuper, Zane Beadles and Russ Hochstein; C J.D. Walton (8) (Note: This is a fluid situation because of Clady’s injury status; if he’s not 100 percent healthy to start the year, Broncos need an extra tackle. Seth Olsen made the 53-man roster last year but is down the depth chart this year).
RB: Knowshon Moreno (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/knowshon-moreno/), Correll Buckhalter (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/correll-buckhalter/), Lance Ball, Justin Fargas and Spencer Larsen (5) (Note: LenDale White is suspended the first four games of the season. This might be a very fluid position)
WR: Jabar Gaffney, Eddie Royal (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/eddie-royal/), Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Brandon Lloyd, Brandon Stokley (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/brandon-stokley/) (6) (Note: I think Matt Willis still has a serious shot. He plays special teams and Stokley does not.)
TE: Daniel Graham, Marquez Branson, Richard Quinn (3)
DL: NTs Jamal Williams and Ronald Fields; DE Justin Bannan, Ryan McBean, Marcus Thomas, Jarvis Green and Le Kevin Smith (7)
LB: Mario Haggan, Robert Ayers, Jarvis Moss (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/jarvis-moss/), Baraka Atkins and Elvis Dumervil (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/elvis-dumervil/); DJ Williams, Akin Ayodele, Wesley Woodyard, Joe Mays (9)
CB: Champ Bailey, Andre Goodman, Perrish Cox, Nate Jones and Alphonso Smith (5)
Safeties: Brian Dawkins (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/brian-dawkins/), Renaldo Hill, Darcel McBath, David Bruton (4)
Specialists: Matt Prater, Britton Colquitt, Lonie Paxton.

i'm going to be disappointed if we have to cut both seth and eric olsen to keep an extra OT with no long term value, and hochstein's sorry ass. . . i won't say he's never done it, but the next time i see him drive anybody off the ball will be the first. . . i'm afraid that could very well happen, though. . . we might be able to sign eric to the practice squad, but i'm betting somebody would sign seth. . .

i also think i might keep chris baker over le kevin smith. . . jamal williams is the definition of a short-term fix-- we need to develop a long term solution at the position, and baker has some potential to be that guy. . . i don't think he's worth letting go for a player like smith, who in the words of bill parcells is "just a guy". . . you can get players just like smith every year in free agency, he's easily replaceable. . .

I can't imagine keeping Ball and Fargas. I think one of them will go and that other roster spot could be used for someone like Syd'Quan, Vaughn, Willis, or an o-lineman.

I agree. I think we'll keep E. Olsen, but probably not Seth. Also think Chris Baker will make the team over Le Kevin Smith. Guess we'll find out. I also think Syd'Quan Thompson will make the squad, not really sure who we'd get rid of to do it though. Gonna be tough to make some cuts this season.

all the more reason to cut brady quinn. . . he's useless-- we may as well just go with two QBs, we're toast if he ever has to play anyway. . . shanahan kept just two quarterbacks several times, with rod MF smith as the emergency QB. . .

Roster spots should be opened up because IMO these guys DO NOT make the cut

marcus thomas
Tyler polumbus (he sucks and beadles and kuper can both play T in a pinch)
Baraka atkins
Lance Ball
Justin Fargas (I think we roll with Knowshon, buck, Ball and larsen in a pinch until white gets back, then I think we cut ball too)
Seth Olsen or Eric Olsen- Eric probably makes it to PS, but with these open spots seth can hang on

I still think we go 7 deep at WR and willis stays.

No way! Either Willis or Stokley gets a pink slip. Question being do you keep a known quantity in Brandon, knowing this could be his last year?

Or do you keep Willis? As stated earlier, Willis also provides help on ST.

My guess is Stokley makes it. Willis' hands are too inconsistent.
