Broncos rosterology: A first guess at the 53-man roster

With Broncos training camp over and two preseason games complete, we’re closing in on the first round of cuts (on Aug. 31) when the roster will go from 80 to 75, and we’re less than two weeks away from the major cuts, when the team will pick its 53-man roster.
Here’s how the Broncos roster looked at the end of the preseason last year: 3 quarterbacks, 4 running backs, 9 offensive linemen, 6 wide receivers, 3 tight ends; 7 defensive linemen, 9 linebackers (including Spencer Larsen), 4 cornerbacks, 5 safeties; and 3 specialists.
I don’t expect the breakdown to be too different this year, and I’ve used this as a guide for my prediction below.
Among the potential changes:
** Larsen is now officially a fullback so the team will have to decide whether to carry four tailbacks plus Larsen, or to have only three true tailbacks, with Larsen as the fourth member of that group.
** Last year the Broncos kept 4 corners and 5 safeties. I see the numbers being reversed this year. Nate Jones is a cornerback first, but he can play safety as well.
** Another issue for the team to address is what to do with Elvis Dumervil (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/elvis-dumervil/). By Sept. 4, he will be several weeks into his rehab following surgery to repair his torn pectoral muscle and the team should know if it is worth saving a spot on the 53-man roster for him on the chance he could return by late November.
So … here’s my preliminary guess at which players will make the 53-man roster. The key word here is “GUESS.” We can all come back here in 12 days and laugh and laugh about how wrong I was.
Note: I’m a little unsure of what Josh McDaniels (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/josh-mcdaniels/) will ultimately decide to do at running back and wide receiver, particularly. Special teams will play a big role in if the team keeps one fewer running back and an additional linebacker, for example.
QBs: Kyle Orton (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/kyle-orton/), Brady Quinn, Tim Tebow (3)
OL: Ts Ryan Clady, Ryan Harris, D’Anthony Batiste, Tyler Polumbus; Gs Chris Kuper, Zane Beadles and Russ Hochstein; C J.D. Walton (8) (Note: This is a fluid situation because of Clady’s injury status; if he’s not 100 percent healthy to start the year, Broncos need an extra tackle. Seth Olsen made the 53-man roster last year but is down the depth chart this year).
RB: Knowshon Moreno (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/knowshon-moreno/), Correll Buckhalter (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/correll-buckhalter/), Lance Ball, Justin Fargas and Spencer Larsen (5) (Note: LenDale White is suspended the first four games of the season. This might be a very fluid position)
WR: Jabar Gaffney, Eddie Royal (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/eddie-royal/), Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Brandon Lloyd, Brandon Stokley (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/brandon-stokley/) (6) (Note: I think Matt Willis still has a serious shot. He plays special teams and Stokley does not.)
TE: Daniel Graham, Marquez Branson, Richard Quinn (3)
DL: NTs Jamal Williams and Ronald Fields; DE Justin Bannan, Ryan McBean, Marcus Thomas, Jarvis Green and Le Kevin Smith (7)
LB: Mario Haggan, Robert Ayers, Jarvis Moss (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/jarvis-moss/), Baraka Atkins and Elvis Dumervil (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/elvis-dumervil/); DJ Williams, Akin Ayodele, Wesley Woodyard, Joe Mays (9)
CB: Champ Bailey, Andre Goodman, Perrish Cox, Nate Jones and Alphonso Smith (5)
Safeties: Brian Dawkins (http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/tag/brian-dawkins/), Renaldo Hill, Darcel McBath, David Bruton (4)
Specialists: Matt Prater, Britton Colquitt, Lonie Paxton.
