Who’s Johnny (Williams)?

There are 111 people named John or Johnny Williams on Wikipedia’s disambiguation of the name. The linebacker the Broncos signed Thursday morning is not among them. If he is to make his name onto that page, he’ll need to show some spark immediately.

His story is similar to that of Michael Oher’s, made famous by the book and film “The Blind Side.” According to a 2009 story in the Florida Times-Union, a Neptune Beach, Fla. widow took in Williams and his two sisters after his mother was imprisoned, helping stabilize his life and improve his grade-point average enough to be considered for a scholarship.

Williams was primarily a strong-side linebacker at Kentucky, and played alongside three-year veteran Wesley Woodyard from 2005-07. He earned an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game after his senior year, but went undrafted after being projected as a fourth- to-sixth-round selection. A training-camp stint in Jacksonville and a brief cameo on Pittsburgh’s practice squad followed.

Williams’s size fits the profile: 6-foot-2, 246 pounds. But his 40-yard dash time at his Pro Day workout was 4.74 seconds — not what he had hoped.

The decision to waive Nick Greisen ended his attempt to come back from a knee injury incurred early in last year’s training camp. The Broncos kept the inside linebacker and special-teams stalwart on injured reserve and re-signed him just after the draft in April, but he was stuck on the third team at training camp.

Greisen struggled at times in a camp that was long on effort but short on big plays. Meanwhile, the Broncos’ younger linebackers making an impression — including rookie Jammie Kirlew, an outside linebacker by trade who’s taken some inside reps and shown promise with his versatility and energy.
