View Full Version : Favre a Bronco?

I don't necessarily like Lincicome, but this was entertaining reading:

Knowing it would never work and that it will never happen, the notion of Brett Favre quarterbacking the Broncos is still fascinating.

Well, why not? The Broncos have never shied away from washed-up legends. We think of Jerry Rice, we try to forget Simeon Rice. Shannon Sharpe was allowed back and Terrell Davis was humored.

Others have allowed themselves to become gimmicks. It would be like Joe Montana going to Kansas City or maybe John Unitas to San Diego, except that Unitas could no longer play and Montana could.

So can Favre play, and not likely for Green Bay, which gave him his goodbye moment and his job to Aaron Rodgers.

The special case of Favre is that hints of his return allow the imagination to race, picturing the man in local team colors, doing what he did for 16 years in Green Bay, seeing his touchdowns and not his interceptions.

This must be true for the other teams in football, save possibly New England and the Colts, and even then, to be an injury away from the most legendary quarterback since John Elway might cause some to root for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to stay down.

When Favre made his tearful and tasteful farewell, a model of grace for these things, there seemed nowhere to go but out.

It was not that the door closed behind him, though it did, or that the Packers pushed him, though they held it open, but that there was a special sense of completion to it, a career in full, and anything else would ruin it.

That anything else just may be that Favre really did not want to go, that the Packers more or less made him feel he was no longer welcome, that for the good of all, as Favre himself put it, it was time to see life through the front windshield.

Favre allowed then that the itch may return and possibly it has. He never said he could no longer play, only that he would no longer play and that bit of space was allowed because of who he is.

He spoke of the only way he could possibly change his mind was if he would play in another Super Bowl, so it would appear that any place he will play - provided the Packers allow him that freedom - would be for a team close to the top.

That brings us back to the Broncos. Ideally, the Broncos do not need an old quarterback, even one so great as Favre, not with young Jay Cutler trying to live up to the very comparison, that he most resembles a young Favre.

Let us look at that. In Favre's third season - without the added consideration of diabetes to adjust to - he led the Packers to a 9-7 record, threw for 19 touchdowns (his lowest season total for the next 13 years) had a quarterback rating of only 72.2 but was able to win a wild-card game.

If Cutler is only that productive this season, it will be considered a wash, neither encouraging nor terrible. It may be as high as the Broncos can aim.

Now, imagining Favre there instead, there would be no lack of excitement and attention, more so than another mediocre season would bring. Nor will there be an absence of curiosity wherever Favre plays, if he does play.

Until training camps open, or maybe even until the season begins, the Favre commotion will continue. He does not appear to have gotten all the football out of himself that is there. And judging by the flurry of notice on his possible return, neither have we seen all of him we want to.

Favre is not the first nor the last great athlete to find it impossible to let go. Michael Jordan drew crowds for minor league baseball. Muhammad Ali had to be whipped in the Bahamas before he conceded. Gordie Howe would play today if someone would let him.

Here is a suggestion for all, fans, teams and the game itself.

Why not let Favre play one game for every team, at least in the NFC? That's 16 games, 16 teams. Let him have a last farewell tour, letting each city get its little piece of Favre and Favre his little share of them. Even if it is just one series, or as a holder on kicks.

He could give a wave and go on to the next town. Maybe that would scratch his itch.

If Favre is willing to throw away all the goodwill and public affection that carried him off to do nothing until he could think of something, whatever he does next, wherever he does it, it will one game too many.

Sorry if this was posted already - I didn't see it if it was.

maybe our only way to get another player into the HOF.

Seriously I would not like him here only because it would delay Jays development, beyond that he is one of my favorite QB of all time..

Favre is definitely going into the HOF as a Packer, no matter what happens. :hi:

If Brett Favre was a Bronco I'd shit my pants and cry at the same time. Best day ever. Then we'd be debating who the best Broncos QB of all time was. It'll be like the Plummer Day's all over again.

Oh yeah, let's bring in Favre. He could sit on the bench and root for Cutler.

Sorry . . . I am a Favre fan . . . but we have a stud at the position already.

Cutler is young. Favre is old. Cutler has a good 12 - 15 years ahead of him.
Favre has maybe one, two at the outside. No way would Shanny take the
chance of his relations with Cutler turning sour. No way.

We don't need Brett Favre. Jay Cutler is a mobile-quarterback and he looks alike young Elway. I am happy with Cutler.

If I had to choose between Favre and Cutler as our starter this year, I would choose Cutler...

I'm sure homerism would factor into that decision but none the less, that is the choice I would make..

Favre needs to disappear......he left his team hangin' the last 2 or 3 years......not making his final "will he or won't he retire" decision until after the draft.....what a joke..............

Just go away and show up in Canton in 5 years......and then go away again....

Hell yeah. I have never liked Favre....... Always thought he was selfish, a media whore, and drama queen........ He does need to go away...... he had some good years......... But he didnt have any good years with bad teams like Elway did. The thought of Favre as a Bronco makes me sick........ But I have never liked him........

Favre to the Vikings, Bears, or Ravens make the most sense. With Cutler around, Favre to the Broncos makes no sense at all. Even if we didn't have Cutler, Favre's personality is such that he would try to overpower Shanahan the way he'd been pushing McCarthy around, and that just won't happen.

If i had to choose between farve in his younger days or cutler now. I would hands down take cutler.

Honestly i dont even like brett favre. I respect for the great player he is and the things he has accomplished in his long career, but I was never really a fan of his.

I also truely feel that jay will be able to eclipse some of his records and after a long healhty career for him be able to get HOF.

Packers GM is just tired of the soap opera crap favre puts them through. I would be also. Every off season Favre makes te whole off season about him. Why doesnt he get criticism for being a attention whore? Packers GM is not trying to see favre back and i cant blame him. Aaron Rodgers needs to be the guy and he is the guy. They have installed everything in mini camps that suits what Rodgers does best.

The Packers have a very very good team. Farve has a better chance to take them to the SB THIS year.
I agree that Rogers needs to be the man but if Farve wants to come back one more year to make a SB run, he's the best chance.

I don't even think the Packers know if Rogers is going to be the man. They did draft Brohm in the second round.

I've lost a lot of respect for Favre in his waning years. He's held Green Bay and their beloved team hostage for 3 seasons now... though his performances finally came back during the season.

Don't do it again Brett. Just sail into the sunset.

HE was a Bronco he played in the AFC west except one SB year with BAL.. His records are being broken left and right..

While we bronco fans think he is a slam dunk the voters are predominately east of the Mississippi dominant..

Yes there is a good chance he could be overlooked like many of the other Ex broncos have been..

Favre would comeback anywhere that he is going to sit. He would have to start. He would sit in Denver. I think the most likely places are Atlanta and Tampa, with KC as an outside chance.

But I hope Brett stays retired! He done it all and a ******* season outside of Green Bay will add little to his career. Come on Brett, buy into some business or just manage your investments. I've heard rumors about the Monday night Booth. He could be the next Don Meridith:D!

Minnesota or Chicago would be perfect for Brett Favre but I doubt Green Bay would let him go to a division rival.

Brett would make a horrible game commentator. He seems to me too much of a meat-head dimwit jock. But that's just my opinion.

I saw a program where Brett did not even know the difference from a nickel defense from the regular set when he was drafted to Atlanta. Another QB had to fill him in. Brett's reaction was, "That's it? who cares..."
I guess with a cannon for an arm, it really doesn't matter if there is an extra DB or 2.

I can't see him go to either Minnesota or Chicago, not after being in Green Bay for all those years.

There is a differences between a commentator and an analyst. Meridith didn't have a clue either, but he was entertaining.
