Perrish Cox ahead of Alphonso Smith and 2nd behind Royal for return man. He's looking like a good pickup early on, maybe stealing him late will help make ammends for what is looking like a busted pick in Smith. Or better yet, maybe Smith will suddenly start to show up as well.

I'll be interested to see who the odd man out is between Willis and Stokley at WR. Lloyd appears to be safe.

We wasted a 1st on Smith so I fully expect him with a year under his belt to beat out Cox. This would be a good problem to have. Two young solid up and coming CB's. Makes me remember when we had Foxy and DWill pushing for the #2. Baileys no spring chicken but he still has some solid years if he stays healthy.

If I were a gamblin man then my money would be on Cox winning the job though.

It's disapointing to see Marcus Thomas with the 3rd stringers.

Spencer Larsen is our only option at FB??? Injury??? wtf!

To be fair, Alphonso Smith did get a pick 6 from Brady Quinn on 11 on 11 drills tonight.

first thing i thought after reading that was, "way to fight for the fifth corner spot, smith". . . .

but yea, i also have hopes that getting cox on the cheap will somewhat redeem that pick. . .

Why do you think Smith was a wasted pick because he was or might be beat out by Cox who should have been a first round pick.

Eventually both of them will be our starters and will take over for Champ and whats his name.

Let go of the anger it serves no purpose.

Man, theres some gaping holes in that line up.
Oyodele is DENs starting ILB. Hmmm. Thats gonna be a spot to watch.
Very interested to see if this Mays guy can push him there.
Like to see Decker a little higher up at his spot, but its early.
How GREAT were the O-line and Cox picks!?!?!?!
Beadles and Walton starting, and Cox making HUGE strides right away!!
Cox has been the steal of the draft for DEN so far.
Beadles can easily kick out to LT in a pinch too.
I wonder if E.Olsen is considered for a C position at all?
This being the 1st depth chart, i am sure its open to change, but the most glaring
and obvious situation is at CB.
Clearly lil' Alphie has not impressed. Now hes behind a rook, and Tony Carter wasnt
even drafted, and most folks have more confidence and have seen better play from him!
So far, Alphie's been a bust. Have not heard a peep about this guy all
training camp until last night apparently.
I think Syd'Quan will overtake him by week 1.

more like because he was beaten out by an undrafted free agent last year as well as a rookie this year, and he is now basically battling that same undrafted free agent to even make the roster. . . he was so bad last year we had to go out and get some nobody nickel back from the dolphins to take the spot he couldn't and still can't earn. . .

come on. . .

i'm all for giving guys their just chances, but this kid has sucked out loud since the day we overdrafted him. . . we burned what turned out to be the #14 overall pick on him, and he can't even crack the top FOUR cornerback spots on the depth chart, OR help in the return game??

as of right now he's been a complete and total waste of a pick. . . he desperately needs to show us something this year-- anything. . .

when i was at camp last week, he was running with the second team at center. . . i'm guessing the last O-line spot will probably come down to the olsens and hochstein. . .

**EDIT**Found them. They had them again at the bottom of the first portion of offense.

That #14 pick could have come in nicely in this draft. I am not one to write off Smith just yet. Learning to cover in the NFL is one thing. He was a nickel and covering the slot position is a whole different animal because of the amount of open field. I think Smith may be ok. Besides, Perrish is simply a STUD.

So much for all that Branson talk, eh? He is buried.

Agreed. This is it for Alphie. I have been more than patient with his development and have been waiting for him to show signs of improvement, but hes just been MIA.
Man, what a waste of a pick! I am not an MCD hater, but this is one of the moves he made that just reeks of fail.
Waaay overrated and has not done a damn thing to prove otherwise, and its clear from the depth chart.
That pick was at such a huge "value" spot in the draft too.
Look at the players that came AFTER lil' Alphie.
37) Denver Broncos - Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
38) Cincinnati Bengals - Rey Maualuga, LB, Southern Cal
39) Jacksonville Jaguars -Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
40) New England Patriots - Ron Brace, NT, BC
41) New England Patriots - Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut
42) Buffalo Bills - Jairus Byrd, CB, Oregon
43) Carolina Panthers - Everette Brown, DE, Florida State
44) Miami Dolphins - Pat White, QB, West Virginia
45) New York Giants - Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
46) Houston Texans - Connor Barwin, DE, Cincinnati
47) Oakland Raiders - Michael Mitchell, S, Ohio
48) Denver Broncos - Darcel McBath, CB, Texas Tech
49) Seattle Seahawks - Max Unger, OT, Oregon
50) Cleveland Browns - Mohammed Massaoqui, WR, Georgia
51) Buffalo Bills - Andy Levitre, OT, Oregon State
52) Cleveland Browns - David Veikune, DE, Hawaii
53) Philadelphia Eagles - LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh
54) Minnesota Vikings - Phil Loadholt, OL, Oklahoma
55) Atlanta Falcons - William Moore, S, Missouri
56) Indianapolis Colts - Fili Moala, DT, Southern Cal
57) Baltimore Ravens - Paul Kruger, DE, Utah
58) New England Patriots - Sebastian Vollmer, OL, Houston
59) Carolina Panthers - Sherrod Martin, S, Troy
60) New York Giants - William Beatty, OT, Connecticut
61) Miami Dolphins - Sean Smith, CB, Utha
62) Tennessee Titans - Sen'Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
63) Arizona Cardinals - Cody Brown, DE, Connecticut
64) Denver Broncos - Richard Quinn, TE, North Carolina

This just gives me nausea looking at it.

To be fair to Alphonso Smith... out of the 7 we took last year only Moreno and maybe McBath played as well as they should.

Smith isnt the only one that has alot to prove. It isnt his fault that McD overspent.

Quinn is a bigger disappointment to me than Smith is.

While it looks like Cox has stepped up and over Smith, is that a testimony to Cox or a knock on Smith?

I think its a testimony to Cox. Cox is bigger than Alphonso, and has been playing very well.

But Phonso has been playing well too.

Somebody has to be first on the depth chart.

Smith is playing better and has shown marked improvement according to the camp reports.....so Im not calling Smith a bust just yet.

Quinn however, I would like to see more out of.

At least hes blocking better.

I am SHOCKED that they have bruce hall ahead of lance ball....

Lance has been running with the 1s everytime i have seen him thus far in TC. Bruce has been with the twos. Very bizarre.

In phonzie defense, he is not a nickel back. He plays well in man and when on the outside. I do not know why we keep trying to turn him into a nickel. I think that is really stunting his development.

But look at it this way. We used a first on cox and a 5th on phonz. Now is everyone still so pissed? I think not.

also quinn has looked great in camp and as I said last week. Branson gets cut, this guy sucks. He maybe goes PS, and next year has a shot, but he has looked horrible- absolutely horrible all camp long. ****apparantly he was just carted off the field too *****

I have not seen any camp reports other than last night that had anything good to say about Alphie. Hes been MIA for most of the camp.
And it doesnt look like Cox has stepped over Smith, Cox indeed has stepped over him. He stepped over him in his mind the moment he was drafted. Its a testament to his mentality and work ethic. Clearly this guy has busted his @$$ to not only make an impact, but be a player on this team this year.
Hes outplayed him in ever aspect of the game, AND! as a bonus he looks good on punts and KO's.
Alphie just plain doesnt look good, and has regressed as a player. I think its a pyschological thing for him now. Ive read more good things about Tony Carter and Nate Jones so far this year.
And all the excuses about where he plays, or who hes playing against are just that, excuses.

While i agree with some of that.....I have thought that nate jones has not looked all that good in the nickel. He is getting burned quite a few times. Phonz on the other hand has imo looked better there.

I 100% agree it is mental with him though right now. He is feeling the pressure. He just needs to chill. He did not look good at all at invesco...But the other days I was at camp he was decent, dare i say better than nate jones as the nickel.

When he is on the outside he looked really good. He was the one that broke up this long bomb down the sideline to stokely at TC last week. The media got it wrong, they said it was......cassis vaugh? maybe-dunno. But it was phonz who made the play.

Still if he was not a 1st rdr he would be on the bubble.

I've been very vocal about letting Alphonso Smith have some time before declaring him a bust. Time's up. I think we can say that McD made a huge mistake on that one.

The sleeper that I'm watching is Mays at MLB. He's the thumper that we've been looking for since Al Wison left.

Shut your mouth dude. If there's been anyone on these boards that has had a sour opinion about Bronco players throughout the years it's you. Take a look in the mirror first Jrwiz cause I'm officially tired of it.

Back to talking Broncos.

In regards to the Smith comment. We did use a 1st rounder on him and IMO he should be the starter just for that reason. If he isn't starting over Cox then the pick wasn't justified. That's my opinion and I'll stick to it. God for Cox though, I like seeing late round draft choices step up and make an impact and I hope he does win the job. That's ALSO my opinion.

Boo hoo. Smith isn't a starter after a year and i don't read reports glorifying him every day. Therefore he must suck horribly. Seriously? Guys like Moss and a plethora of other busts never got this much ridicule...but then they weren't drafted by McDaniels so they get a free pass i guess

I alway, ALWAYS have been critical of Moss. Gave him his due time, and then it became apparent he was nothing more than a 3rd down 4-3 Rush DE. And not much of a football player at the NFL level.
You know i am not a MCD hater, but Alphie is not moving forward. He just isnt, and for a pick this high, i think everyone expected to see much, much more. And the excuses are really old.

In regard to Alphonso, I know that I expected more.

The depth chart sure contains some surprises to what had been reported to have occurred in practice. By the way, Andrew Mason's board (MaxDenver.com) seems to do a very good job of covering the preseason practices.

I wonder where Fargas will fit into this depth chart?

It is still weird to me that bruce hall is above lance ball, when lance has been working with the starters the Entire camp.

Also weird that danthony batiste is working at #1 LT, yet the have polumbus there as the backup to clady..(maybe they know ryan will be back so batiste can slide back over)

and lastly that Joe mays lately has been working ahead of akin adoleyeoaeaua at ILB, as his play has surpassed akins, yet he is listed as the backup.

Pre season should sort these out i think.

From what I gather, the preseason depth charts are for media purposes often done by the PR staff rather than the coaching staff. Or at least this is how it works in Jacksonville this time of year.

So Lloyd the #1 WR? He must be really having a good camp. Last year he was mainly just practice squad material until the last few weeks. I'm happy for him though and hope he makes a nice impact for us this year. Hearing all sorts of good things about Willis and hes backing up WR3 so eh. Thats just preseason depth chart though. Will be nice to see who performs thruout preseason.
