back in June; I figured that Royal would be working primarily in the Slot while Decker and Thomas would assume the X & Y position as starters.

It looks like my analysis is being confirmed as day 4 of training camp gets underway today.

Here is a take from yesterdays Training Camp session by:

Eric Decker and Bay-Bay are, by far, our biggest and most physical WRs. Maybe better said our only big and physical WRs. Gaffney is tall but thin.

After watching him play there is absolutely no way Eric Decker will be a slot receiver. He is a big possession receiver. And Bay-Bay is just beast; he might very well make people forget about Brandon Marshall.

Even though Gaffney is a McDaniels favorite and the one with the most knowledge of the offense, our receiving corps of the future (or at least as long as Mac is here) will be Decker and Bay-Bay outside and Royal in the slot.

I didn't see much from the others and am still trying to figure out the hype about Matthew Willis.

-Kenny McKinley and Parrish Cox got most of the reps in KR (we didn't do any punt returns). I would expect one or both of them to make the 53 man roster based upon their abilities as KRs.

I wouldn't be too quick to be blowing yourself for your June prediction. Even if it does pan out.

I will have to check.....but I swear.....I thought I read where you said Tebow would be our number 1 receiver....

Also if you remember correctly I said # 1 center . You see Tebow AKA Superman is going to hike the ball to himself as the No.1 QB and then throw a 50 Yard pass 10 yards off the ground on a frozen rope to himself as the No.1 WR for a TD. Oh this after pitching it back to himself as the No.1 RB on a flea flicker play~!!:D

Personally I hope your boy Tebow starts at left out and Quinn starts at QB.

WR Matthew Willis — It’s becoming remarkable, how consistently remarkable Willis has become. I was asking myself today if any receiver had outperformed Willis in any one practice yet, and I couldn’t convince myself the answer was yes.

Today, The Story of Training Camp caught Tim Tebow’s best ball to date, a deep bomb on a right rollout that Tebow threw across his body. Willis got behind both Perrish Cox and David Bruton and made the leaping catch, falling at the goal line.

He might have impressed me even more with an earlier smart, albeit less flashy play. He made a veteran move in a jump ball with Andre Goodman, having to switch roles and play defender when Kyle Orton’s pass came up short and bat the bobbled ball down…. I’m starting to get really excited about this kid.

WR Jabar Gaffney — Gaffney dropped two catchable balls in team drills, including a beautiful deep dart from Orton on a crossing route over the middle.

In both instances, it seemed like the Broncos next ran a similar play with a different receiver who had no trouble catching the same type of ball — first Brandon Stokley, then Willis.

Switch these around (Thomas = X; Decker = Y) and you'll be spot on.

Denver receiving duo took different routes to NFL

ENGLEWOOD - Eddie Royal and Matthew Willis could not have taken two more different paths to get into the NFL.

Yet the two very well could be playing alongside one another this season for the Denver Broncos at wide receiver.

Royal took the conventional road to the NFL. He starred at perennial power Virginia Tech in college before being a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2008.

Willis' path into the league was a little more out of the ordinary. After giving up football his final two years of high school to concentrate on track, Willis quit that sport his junior year at UCLA and decided to walk on to the Bruins' football team in the spring of 2005.

"It was one of those things that I knew if I didn't go after the opportunity or at least talk to whoever, it was going to be something that I would regret later," Willis said. "I've just been going that direction ever since."

Willis' statistics at UCLA (24 receptions, 248 yards, three TDs) hardly mirror Royal's at Virginia Tech (119 receptions, 1,778 yards, 12 TDs), but he caught the eye of the Baltimore Ravens and signed a free-agent contract with the club in 2007.

Now, Willis, who was on Denver's practice squad in 2009 until starting the regular-season finale against Kansas City, is catching the eye of the Broncos.
Willis made a few how-did-you-do-that catches and also had some nice kick returns during Tuesday's training camp session at Dove Valley.

"Matt: He's a sleeper," Royal said. "We all knew he could play. He's a fast guy and good route runner with good hands that can get the deep ball. He's been great so far this camp, and hopefully he can keep it up."

7-ON-7 HIGHLIGHTS

Demaryius Thomas gained steam as the practice wore on, making himself comfortable in the end zone. His first touchdown catch came on an arcing fade-pass delivered from Kyle Orton in a7-on-7 goal line drill.

Up to that point, the defense had dominated the drill, but the play signaled a change of momentum for the offense.

Tim Tebow followed Thomas’ score with a touchdown throw to Bruce Hall, and the quarterback finished the drill with a bullet-pass to a sliding Eric Decker for another touchdown.

PLAYMAKERS

•Thomas had a sharp evening all-around, developing a good rapport with Orton . In 11-on-11 goal line drills he hooked up with Orton in the end zone, and in the full-field scrimmage he had his most spectacular play of the day.

Champ Bailey shadowed Thomas in man-coverage down the right sideline. When the ball arrived from Orton, Thomas shot up in the air, elevated over Bailey for the reception and atracted a loud applause from the fan section.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Matthew Willis reigned in a deep bomb on the left sideline after Tebow scrambled to his left and launched the long pass.
