Without Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter, the Broncos rushing attack wasn't as successful as they'd like it to be. Of the backs, Lance Ball showed the most flashes, breaking one run for a touchdown against the second team defense.

Kolby Smith didn't have as much success, getting yelled at by McDaniels to not stop running. Later Smith fumbled, he didn't even need to be told, and took off running a lap around the field.

I am thinking McDaniels needs to see more from his RB corp than this (http://www.broncoszone.net/2010/08/practice-report-tuesday-aug-3rd.html)

betts wouldn't be a bad pickup. . . i think smith is a competent grinder, but we certainly don't have any backs on the roster who are so special that we don't need competition at the position. . .

betts isn't special either, but he's an adequate between the tackles runner who's proven at this level. . . adding someone like him or justin fargas would bolster the depth there. . .

if they're looking to add more than another camp body, i still think making a call about the price of acquiring marshawn lynch would be the best choice, but it's not likely at all. . .

Free-agent running back Ladell Betts has scheduled visits with the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints this week, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Tuesday.

Betts spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Washington Redskins and has recovered after tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee last season.

He was a longtime backup to Clinton Portis, though the Redskins went in a different direction this offseason, signing veterans Larry Johnson and Willie Parker.

The Broncos likely became interested in Betts after their top running backs -- Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter -- were injured on the first day of training camp Sunday.

A league source told La Canfora that Moreno pulled his right hamstring and will be out at least two weeks. It's a potentially easily aggravated injury, however, so Moreno's recovery time will be re-assessed as he continues to rest and rehabilitate.

Hopefully we don't need him. I want Baker to start bowling over people. Betts would still have to learn the offense and we have guys here that know it already. I hope.

I hear Chris Simms isn't doing so well in prison. Backup QB > backup RB.

I was just thinking the same thing. He would be a solid pick up.

Just so you know... that's not Ladell Betts. That's Rock Cartwright. Betts never wore #31. Something looked fishy about this picture to me immediately. Betts always wore #46 in Washington.

You got to admit, that was an awesome picure though.:pcguru:

We might as well just leave it up there... I went ahead and added Portis and Betts to the top. Rock Cartwright is with the Raiders now.

It's hard to recognize Betts without seeing a football falling out of his hands.:D

Word from Redskin fan is that Betts is done. Stick a fork in him. He tore both ACL/MCLs... Then there is his Fumblitis Disease

13 starts 13 fumbles 3,176 rushing yards in 8 seasons.

Josh McDaniels’ best comment of the young training camp occurred when he answered a question Thursday about Ben Garland’s military commitment.

Garland, an undrafted rookie defensive lineman from Air Force, was signed by the Broncos even though he must leave the team next month to honor his military commitments.

“We are certainly very respectful of that and the obligation he has,” McDaniels said. “I think the guys are extremely fond of him and proud to be associated with a player who has a greater good in mind. I can’t say enough good things about him. The way he was worked here — it doesn’t surprise me from where he’s coming from _ but he’s just a thrill to be around and we’ll look forward to having him for a while. We wish him the best as he goes and does what he has to do.”

Just goes to show how much McDaniels cares about seeing the character of this team jacked to its utmost.

I mean here is a guy who is not going to make the team, yet he is absorbing a spot on the roster from someone who potentially can just to do nothing more than maintain the highest level of moral as possible in the locker room this is a great story.

I can't help but wonder if Betts is not just a smoke screen to just add to the fire stoking the RB's to perform at a higher level. As a coach you have to use every arsenal in your power to motivate players.

Who didn't run all over the Broncos 26th ranked rushing defense in the league last season?

When your rushing defense is giving up 259 yards to just one RB in a game, having Betts rack uo 114 is not that big of a deal really.

Michael Bush 133, Rashard Mendenhall 155

Half of the teams in the second half of the season killed the Broncos rushing defense. There is a reason the Broncos are starting the season with a brand new defensive line.

Updates…

The Broncos today worked out out a couple running backs. Adrian Peterson, formerly with the Bears, and Ladell Betts, once with Washington, were at Dove Valley for private workouts.

The Broncos also will work out a couple players at other positions in the next day or two.

The team’s plan as it stands now is to wait for running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter to return from injury. Buckhalter (stinger) should be back no later than Monday. Moreno (hamstring) should return in time to get a preseason game carry or two.

But in case one of those backs experiences a glitch in their recovery, the Broncos want to have Plan B in place. Their interest in Betts makes sense as the former Washington Redskin started the Denver D’s slide against the run last year.

Betts, 31, rushed for 114 yards on 26 carries in a 27-17 upset win against the Broncos in Game 10 last season. The next week, Betts suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. The Broncos no doubt are bringing Betts in large part to have their medical people look at his knee.

Among the backs who have been making the workout rounds is ”the other” Adrian Peterson, who played the previous eight seasons with the Chicago Bears, and Keon Lattimore, the younger brother of Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis and who has spent the previous two years on practice squads in Jacksonville and San Francisco.

The Broncos had Betts and Peterson in today to work them out, see what they look like and give them physicals.

The team was not interested in splashing the news of Betts’ and Peterson’s arrival at Dove Valley. The Broncos kicked out radio row at noon today. In other words, there are so many radio shows set up at Dove Valley, they get their own row of tents near the field. But because of the private workouts with Betts and Peterson, the team cleared the row and made the radio folks move.

of course it makes sense to have other options ready, but plan A really needs to be resting moreno until he's fully healthy. . . he's probably the only back we have or are likely to get for this year who has any upside, it would behoove us to handle his recovery as delicately as possible. . .

if it comes down to it we can certainly get by with buck and whoever for a game or two, but we're seriously up the creek if we rush him back and it gets reinjured, and then he's either out or ineffective for most or all of the year. . .

When does Moreno get the injury prone label?

I know some Broncos in the very recent past who were given that label pretty early on.

Moreno was hurt early in TC last year, too! Then the season had it's issues. Now this.

Just wondering.

i went to high school with Betts, and the dude is a beast and a stand up guy. He set a record for rushing yards and td's at Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Missouri, and had a stellar career at Iowa.

be nice to see him catch on with the Broncos.
