Forgive Josh McDaniels if he's unable to stay perpetually cheery this time of year.

For every good thing he sees from his team early in training camp, there's just as many things he sees that need work.

"It's hard to come out here as the head coach and feel like you had a good practice because they're going against each other and somebody is on the losing end," McDaniels said.

So should McDaniels feel encouraged that his offense showed improvement from Monday evening's frustrating session? Or disappointed that the starting defense couldn't stop Kyle Orton and Co. in the two-minute drill.

Such is a dilemma of camp.

"We've got a lot of things to work on, but I like our attitude and our energy," McDaniels said. "So hopefully we can keep that up."
Orton and wide receiver Jabar Gaffney made the play of the day near the end of the two-hour plus practice when they connected for a long touchdown pass in the two-minute drill. Gaffney beat starting corner Andre Goodman in man coverage down the left sideline, right in front of the Broncos fans sitting in the grass at Dove Valley.

"I think the offense finished well on a two-minute drive, but there were some things in the middle that we weren't real pleased with," McDaniels said. "But that's training camp."

Starting inside linebacker D.J. Williams missed his second practice of camp (he also sat our Sunday's evening session), though McDaniels refused to comment about why Williams was absent. Other players who missed today's practice were receiver Kenny McKinley, safety Josh Barrett, nose tackle Chris Baker and running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter, in addition to the three players who have not passed their physicals — Ryan Clady, Darrell Reid and Jamal Williams.

"There's going to be a lot of guys in and out during training camp. It's not uncommon for that to happen," McDaniels said.
