He intercepted a pass in one-on-one drills, but what was most impressive was his turn on kickoff returns, where he made one move and accelerated upfield, hitting top gear so fast that the coverage team looked flat-footed. This kind of work should look familiar to anyone who’s an Oklahoma State fan — or an Oklahoma follower, for that matter.

He has been looking good returning Kicks this ought to bode well for Royal to focus on the being a great receiver this season. (http://maxdenver.com/blog1/2010/08/03/valley-vittles-aug-3-morning-practice/)

Returner Perrish Cox — It’s exciting to watch this kid every time a kickoff or punt goes his way. He has great vision and a real fluid, deceptive speed about him in each cut. He had another solid day today.

COX is starting to make a name for himself like a lot of folks expected (http://broncotalk.net/2010/08/16361/broncos-news/denver-broncos-training-camp-2010-tuesday-aug-3rd-a-m-practice-report/)

-On his impact in special teams

“There was one extra good reason I got drafted – for special teams. It’s kind of one of the big things I love to do. Any way I can help out. (WR) Eddie (Royal) has got a lot of plays, offensively. If I can help him out by returning a lot of kicks, I wouldn’t mind doing that.”

On his performance on special teams so far

“Actually, I think I’m doing pretty good. I get a lot of reps after (practice). I catch a lot of balls and work on ball security, so I get a lot of work at it.”

On the emphasis on special teams in today’s practice

“It kind of broke me down a little bit, but it’s something I’ve got to work through. I’ve got to just get my stamina up and work hard and do what I can do after practice and get a lot of extra work in.”

On his conversations with WR Eddie Royal during drills

“We just put in a few extra returns earlier today, so I ask him for a little help – who am I cutting off of and who do I look for when I return kicks? That’s one of the things I look forward to — just like I do with (CB) Champ (Bailey) at corner.”

On what he’s learned from CB Champ Bailey

“Everything. I actually go to him more than I go to Coach – every little aspect. What am I looking for on this play and that play. He helps me with everything.”

On the difference between punt and kick returns

“Punt (return) is more difficult than kickoffs because you’ve got a lot of players running at you, and then you’ve got to focus on catching the ball and the punt team. I’d say I like kickoff return better.”

On practicing in pads

“It’s kind of better. You don’t have a receiver coming off the line easily – just a free route. You can jam and work on a lot of different techniques.”

WHen I was at camp yesterday I was impressed with Cox's acceleration and speed on kickoff returns. He and Kenny McKinley alternated and Cox just seemed so much faster.

OSU has had one of the best return games over the past couple of seasons. Cox is a big reason for that.

""Champ knows everything from the small things to the big things,"" Cox said. ""As far as technique-wise, as far as what to look for in this formation or that formation. I go to Champ for everything.""

This was today~!!:elefant:

Highlight: With several veterans given off the morning practice, young players got plenty of work in key spots. None performed better than rookie corner Perrish Cox, who replaced a resting Champ Bailey at left cornerback. Cox had two interceptions in team work, both off Kyle Orton against starting wide receivers.

Cox also deflected 2 passes.

This cat stays outta trouble, and DEN has a seriosly evil secondary.
What a steal!
Me and Underrated had an ongoing discussion last year about who would be better Cox or Alteran Verner as a sleeper player.
Underrated wins!

Edit: Has anyone heard anything about Lil' Alphie?!?!?!?
Hows he doin?

“Going in with the one’s, I was nervous,” Cox said after practice. “I didn’t want to make no mistakes, and that was kind of the biggest part."

"I was thinking so much. It was kind of hurting me on the smaller things, as far as where my hip is and everything. So getting in a few days under my belt with (the ones) has put me in a bit of a comfort mode where I’m kind of comfortable, studying my playbook as much as I can, and talking to Coach Ed (secondary coach Ed Donatell).”

His previous experience with the first team paid off. He first intercepted Kyle Orton by jumping a short crossing route intended for Richard Quinn. Later, he picked off Orton again, this time with a hugely impressive leaping grab at Orton’s deep sideline attempt to Brandon Lloyd. Cox’s impressive day also included a number of pass breakups, at least two of which came in the end zone.

His coaches were pleased, indeed.

“Coach Ed used to come at me after every practice and say, ‘Technique, technique, technique!’,” Cox said. “Today he kind of backed off, gave me a high five.”

This is great news. Im talking about his play at CB. Hopefully he continues to perform and even improves. If he can replace Goodman or Bailey, that would be great.

Now, in other news, whats going on with Alphonso Smith?

Exactly! Have not heard a peep about lil' Alphie.
And considering that he was so highly touted as the next great CB in DEN, i am just amazed theres no news worthy of printing about him.

He wasnt highly touted as much as he was highly scrutinized. They used/wasted a first round pick on him.

Oh he was highly touted here my friend. The reaction to that pick was either, "WTF?!?!" or "Yes! He's so dope, and highly touted!!"

Punt Coverage and Return drills. 7 on 7's (No Gunners). The JUGG's machine puts one all the way into the end zone. Perrish Cox lets it go. The 2nd Team has its turn and they practice the Get Off and Return blocking.

Eddie Royal, Perrish Cox and Syd'Quan Thompson rotate as Returners. Coach Priefer is getting intense. Now it is 11 on 11 and the emphasis is on pressuring the Punter.

The last two reps are Live Punts and Perrish Cox shows some elusiveness on the final play.
