Versatile veteran offensive lineman Russ Hochstein made his 2010 debut at a Broncos practice Wednesday as the team opened camp.

Hochstein suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second-to-last game of the 2009 season. He had surgery to repair the injured ACL and spent all offseason in rehab.

Hochstein was practicing at right guard Wednesday. Chris Kuper will be the starting right guard when the full squad begins practice on Sunday. Rookie JD Walton lined up at center, with rookie Zane Beadles at left guard. Hochstein took snaps at center behind Walton.

Veteran Ryan Harris, who missed half of 2009 with a toe injury, also reported to camp with the team’s rookies.

This is good to hear, I think it's better for the team that Walton can win the center job outright. Hochstein is a versatile backup, I'm okay with him on the team, but I don't want him starting.

The Broncos opened their 2010 training camp today missing a few notable faces.

When the team took the field for a mid-afternoon workout for rookies and players who were injured this past season, first-round picks Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow remained unsigned and missing.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said general manager Brian Xanders had been in regular contact with the two players' representatives. Tebow and Thomas had worked out in the Broncos' Dove Valley complex earlier this week, but players cannot practice or participate in any other team activities once training camp opens until they are signed.

"We hope to have both of them (signed) as soon as possible," McDaniels said. "I don't have any timetables or anything like that, but we look forward to seeing them as soon as it plays out. We know this is something that happens, we're certainly not unique in that scenario. There are a lot of teams dealing with that."

Left tackle Ryan Clady (knee) is on the non-football injury list and linebacker Darrell Reid (knee)and nosetackle Jamal Williams have been placed on the league's physically unable to perform list. None of the three are expected to practice when the team begins full-team workouts Sunday. Williams missed most of last season in San Diego with a torn biceps.

Clady, coming off his first Pro Bowl season in 2009, injured his knee playing basketball during the offseason. Tyler Polumbus, a Cherry Creek High School graduate, will work at Clady's spot until Clady returns.

Overall McDaniels said he was happy to be back on the field after an offseason's worth of work to try to improve on last year's 8-8 finish.

"I think our team knows that our most important work is in front of us," McDaniels said. "It's tough, but if you want to be a good football team in this league, then you have to put in that time and that effort to make sure you have a great training camp."

Dove Valley is back open for business.

Rookies and early-reporting veterans took to the practice field Wednesday in shorts and shells — no pads — for the first “opportunity practice” of the summer.

The group included all seven signed 2010 draft picks, including Eric Decker, who saw his first extended action during practice. The veterans in action were Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Darcel McBath, Kenny McKinley, Marquez Branson, Nick Greisen, Russ Hochstein, Kolby Smith, Britton Colquitt, Ryan Harris, J.J. Arrington, Lance Ball and Bruce Hall.

There was a notable difference on the team’s practice jerseys — a patch with the logo for the HealthONE Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. In addition to the patch, HealthONE will donate one dollar to the Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation for every fan that attends training camp — up to 30,000 fans.

It was a quick practice — it lasted a little more than an hour, with lighting and thunder occasionally crashing in the distance. Below are a few quick hits and photos from Wednesday’s session.

QUICK HITS
# In addition to the rookies that participated in practice, Eddie Royal was seen on the sideline. He watched practice from a door near the locker room before heading back inside.
# A few position groups had far less players than normal, meaning there was plenty of one-on-one coaching to go around. The only two defensive linemen at practice — Ben Garland and Jeff Stehle — got plenty of work with defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely. Branson, Riar Geer and Nathan Overbay got extensive face time with tight ends coach Bob Ligashesky, and Orton and Quinn worked closely with quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels for the majority of the practice. These opportunity practices are designed to give rookies a bit of a head start heading into training camp — having less bodies in the position groups is one way to accomplish that.
# Overbay handled the long-snapping duties during special teams drills. Throughout OTAs, he occasionally worked with Lonie Paxton after practice to improve his consistency.
# During one of the more interesting drills of the day, cornerbacks practiced covering one receiver while the pass went to another. Their task was to break away from the block of their receiver and make the tackle.
# Decker ran routes and participated in practice after missing OTAs with a foot injury.

Below are pictures from Wednesday’s practice. (on link)

This is the rookies, plus qb's, and players who were hurt - not the offficial one. The counter is for the official one, where everyone is suppose to be there.

I can't help but wonder, if Royal was watching Decker's progress especially after having just returned from Arizona Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald's camp in Minnesota.

http://maxdenver.com/blog1/2010/07/28/clady-reid-to-pup-thomas-tebow-still-unsigned-as-camp-begins/#more-61

As most of Denver’s rookies and a few of their veterans convened for the first of four pre-training camp sessions Wednesday, most questions revolved around the players who were not and will not be practicing, rather than the ones who were.

The status of first-rounders Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas remained unchanged; they are stlll unsigned and did not join their fellow rookies on the field.

“We hope to have both of them as soon as possible. I don’t have a timetable,” McDaniels said.

Thomas and Tebow could both be on the field Sunday. Darrell Reid and Ryan Clady will not. Reid will be on the physically-unable-to-perform list, while Clady will start camp on the non-football-injury list.

Shortly after McDaniels’ press conference, the team announced that nose tackle Jamal Williams will also be on the PUP list; he practiced on and off during OTAs.

If they are on the PUP list when the regular season begins, they will sit out the first six weeks. Being on the PUP list at training camp does not necessarily have an impact on the regular season.

With Clady ruled out, McDaniels said that Tyler Polumbus will work at left tackle when full camp sessions begin Sunday morning at Dove Valley. Ryan Harris, who was injured during most of OTAs but was on hand for Wednesday’s pre-camp session, will line up at right tackle, with Chris Kuper next to him at right guard. The left guard and center positions will rotate among a few different players, McDaniels said.

BUT THERE WERE SOME HAPPY RETURNS on Wednesday, most notably for offensive lineman Russ Hochstein and wide receiver Eric Decker. Neither practiced during OTAs, but both were on the field and worked fully.

Hochstein and Harris were joined by fellow veterans Nick Greisen and J.J. Arrington on the field Wednesday. Second-year safety Darcel McBath, wide receiver Kenny McKinley and tight end Marquez Branson also practiced. Branson missed some OTA sessions due to injury.

“It’s great to see them out there and participating,” McDaniels said.

EVEN THOUGH FULL CONTACT SESSIONS AREN’T UNTIL SUNDAY, the days are already full for the players on hand with meetings and playbook study. The work might not have been full speed, but it would have behooved Tebow and Thomas to have their contracts signed, McDaniels noted.

“We went through 60 pages this morning in an installation meeting and those pages are filled with information,” McDaniels said. “It’s not that we aren’t going to go back and review that; we will.

“I think that any opportunity to get in more — particularly a young player, whatever position it is; whether it is a quarterback or something else — helps them.

“So we are trying to get those two players in as quickly as we can so they can have an opportunity to compete and learn, but I wouldn’t say that anybody has panicked or anything like that or anything is detrimental at this point.”

Decker said that for Tebow and Thomas, it wasn’t a matter of not wanting to be at practice.

“They both want to be out here,” Decker said. “It’s tough for both of them. They’re both competitors and they want to be here with their teammates.”

BEGINNING SUNDAY, THE COMPETITION WILL AGAIN BE PHYSICAL, once more underscoring the difference between the Shanahan and McDaniels eras.

“To establish ourselves as a football team that’s going to be physical, you have to be physical in training camp,” McDaniels said. “You can’t just talk about it and rest and kind of go through the motions in training camp and hope that on Sep. 12, we kind of turn out to be a physical team.”

That being said, McDaniels plans to sprinkle some walk-through sessions in with the full-contact ones.

“That may be something you see a little more from us. Instead of going out there and having a two-a-day every single day, we will have a scheduled two-a-day where one of them might be a walk-through and the other a padded practice.

“For the most part though, it is going to be the same style.”

http://blog.denverbroncos.com/denverbroncos/thursday-morning-practice-report/

The Broncos returned to the Dove Valley practice field on a bright and sunny Thursday morning for the first of two workouts today for early reporting players.

During the opportunity practice that lasted roughly an hour, coaches emphasized teaching for the rookies, quarterbacks and select veterans who took the field for the second straight day.

Once again, the team’s thin numbers at certain positions meant coaching assistants and members of the team’s equipment crew had to fill in to help out during certain drills.

The team returns to the practice field this afternoon at 3 p.m.

FUNDAMENTAL FOCUS:

The defensive coaches made a special point to concentrate on the little things during the workout, focusing on positioning and technique with the young players. Defensive coordinator Don Martindale, secondary coach Ed Donatell and assistant linebackers coach Roman Phifer stressed pre-snap stance and knowing assignments during a 7-on-7 walk-through against coaches and equipment staff.

At one point, Martindale urged players to “Show off your athleticism. Don’t just be waist-benders.”

Later during a short 11-on-11 period, Martindale counseled Cassius Vaughn after the young cornerback committed an apparent pass interference penalty against Patrick Honeycutt.

On the next play, Vaughn drew Martindale’s praise as he shadowed Kenny McKinley on a sideline pass that fell incomplete.

RUNNING BACK ATTACK:

One position group that hasn’t had to worry about numbers is the running backs, showing the competition to join the returning backfield of Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter has already begun.

The team’s other five running backs — J.J. Arrington, Lance Ball, Toney Baker, Bruce Hall and Kolby Smith — have each taken part in both workouts, getting a chance to work with first-year running backs coach Eric Studesville.

During this morning’s practice, the group worked on taking hand-offs and receiving short passes from quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn.

QUICK HITS:
# During one period, the team participated in dual special teams drills. On one field, players worked on kick-off returns with Arrington, McKinley and Perrish Cox taking turns as the deep men. On the other field, players worked on blocking for punt returns. Punter Britton Colquitt stepped in to feign being the returner in that drill.
# Quinn and Orton continued to get plenty of time with their younger passcatchers during the practice. The quarterbacks first worked on a number of timing routes with the wide receivers and later got a chance to toss passes to the running backs and tight ends.
# With just five defensive backs, Donatell had to get creative for individual drills with his players during the workout. At one point, the veteran coach had safeties Darcel McBath and Kyle McCarthy working on playing balls in the air while the three cornerbacks acted as receivers. Later, the cornerbacks — Vaughn, Cox and Syd’Quan Thompson — worked on covering coaching assistants running short routes.
# Veterans Jabar Gaffney and Elvis Dumervil made brief appearances on the practice field after wrapping up individual workouts. Gaffney smiled and said he’d be ready for Sunday’s first full-team workout on the way to the players’ parking lot. Dumervil stopped to shake Martindale’s hand before heading into the team facility.

http://blog.denverbroncos.com/denverbroncos/thursday-afternoon-practice-report/

The Broncos completed their second practice of the day Thursday afternoon — essentially a walkthrough.

The majority of the session was spent in individual position drills, where the rookies and early-reporting veterans ran through plays as if it were a full-team drill during training camp.

“We have 38 players, which is close to half of the roster,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “It is not enough for us, though, to get out there and run a lot of team plays together.”

What the players are getting out of the practices, however, is beneficial for those looking to get a head start. As McDaniels explained in his afternoon press conference, Wednesday’s practice was identical to what Sunday’s training camp kickoff practice will be — with less players and less actual team drills. This morning’s practice was akin to the second day of training camp, tonight’s practice was like day three, and so on.

“So, they’re getting an opportunity in the meeting room to simulate exactly how training camp is going to go, even though we are not going out there and running all those things in a team atmosphere,” the head coach explained. “There’s definitely a ton to be gained.”

QUICK HITS
# The players spent most of the practice with their own position group. For example, the linebackers started out practice pushing a tackling dummy on a sled across the field, then worked on snagging interceptions. Defensive backs covered each other as some ran routes as receivers.
# Occasionally, two position groups would work with one another. At one point, Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn practiced timing with the receivers, who ran different routes. After Kenny McKinley ran a route toward the sideline, Orton stopped the play and called him back. The two talked, then the receiver lined back up. McKinley ran a slightly tweaked route this time, and Orton fired a pass between his numbers for a catch.
# President and CEO Pat Bowlen was present at the afternoon session. He walked between the two fields, stopping to chat with McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders.
# The approximately one-hour practice closed with a quick offense versus defense drill. Two standouts during the session were Perrish Cox and McKinley. Early in the drill, Cox cut in front of McKinley and nearly snared an interception, but settled for a pass breakup. Later in the drill, Quinn found McKinley twice — first in the middle of a crowd, and later on a deep ball just past the outstretched arms of Syd’Quan Thompson.

Below are pictures from the afternoon session. The team will be back on the field at 11 a.m. tomorrow. (on link)
