This is a place to discuss all underwater activities. I guess that would fall into SCUBA, free-diving, and snorkeling. I hope I'm not alone in here.
I recently got a new underwater digi and would like to share some of my photography, but welcome any and all thought's or stories on the subject.

I hope this is the right forum for this.

If people complain in this thread about scrolling, you could resize them, or since this is 'your' scuba thread and you want them to see the full rez shots, you could have them keep scrolling.

I'll leave it up to you in this thread.

I love diving !!! I have been to a few places and dive the Channel Island off California at least a couple times a year. You can see some really cool stuff and almost always get to swim with the sea lions. ( little scary at first) The only down side to the Channel islands is the cold water!!:D

Have you ever been to any of the Channel islands. The most popular are Catalina and Anacapa.

I've never been diving in the Pacific. I'd love to. I've got a cousin in Hawaii that I'd like to visit along with my selfish reasoning to dive everyday.

Cozumel is one of the best places around here because they protect the reefs from fishing. Over here on my side they fish the hell out of these waters so it's almost impossible to see anything big, like a dolphin fish or groupers. I've only seen two nurse sharks in over 100 dives over here.

We see alot of turtles, eels, barracudas, porcupine puffers, and all the other reef dwellers, but not alot of big stuff. I'm going up to Holbox later this fall to check out the whale sharks. I'll be sure to bring the camera.

I'm working on my divemaster course as we speak. I plan to go to Utila, Honduras for the instructor course sometime this winter, and I'll also be sure to take the camera. I have an internship here in Puerto so it's tough to give up the free diving especially when I need all the botom time I can get.

I'm sure you see your share of big stuff over there, sometimes we see spotted eagle rays here. Actually today I saw a blue Marlin during my safety stop. It was cool. I ran into a school of Tarpons before the hurricane, but I haven't taken the camera out since Dean because the visibility still sucks. I know I shouldn't complain because it's much better here than places in Cali, but I've been spoiled with 100ft visibility or more.

Thanks for sharing your stuff. It's impressive, even for a Bolts fan;)(had to slip that in:).

sanluis
08-29-2007, 04:13 PM
Anacapa is around 55-64 degrees sometimes warmer sometimes colder depending on depth and season. Two degrees makes a big difference believe it or not. Catilina is over 60-74 degrees and is much farther south near long beach

In Cozumel we dove the palancar reef. It was some of the best diving I have ever seen. This was over five years ago and a number of hurricanes have past that way but I bet it would still be worth your time to check it out. I did five night dives there and it is was really cool. I swear I saw a lobster as big as me!

Cozumel has recovered for the most part, and Dean didn't hurt it much at all. There are broken fans, sponges and soft corals, but no major damage. I plan on going over soon I haven't been there for a while either. It's only a 30 minute boat ride from here.

Do you use a dry suit or are you using 7mil with farmer john and hoodie. That sounds cold to me bro. I need a Brrrrrrrrrr smilie.

When I think of a cave, I'm thinking no light at all. My instructor said during the cave course you have do do a 45 minute swim with no light, nothing. Holding the line and following it from rock to rock.

The cenotes I've been in here you can see light the entire time. You don't need a special certification for them but the true caves you do.

I'm jazzed up to talk to a fellow diver. It might just be you and me here, hopefully Tned doesn't mind us hogging up bandwith with our pics.

I have not done a true cave dive or big wreck dive ware you have to follow a rope. The caves in the USVI wer short tunnels really or very shallow allowing plenty of light. I have had darker dives in the kelp. :D

In Cozumel the caves or tunnels are in the reef with plenty of hole like Swiss cheese letting in the light. It was very cool and easy to follow the dive master Thru the tunnels.

The cenotes are all fresh water right? That must be very fun!

30 minutes!!! Dude !! you have to go asap! I used a dive shop called Blue bubbles no troubles in Cozumel. You have to go check it out. Even a shore dive would be amazing there. The Palancar reserve is the best. You have to pay a few Peso to get in and it was well worth it.

So how did you get such a cool gig in Mexico?

In Calif. I wear a the 7mil with the hood. I want to get a dry suit and have "borrowed" one from the dive shop here to see how nice it was...big mistake. I now want one even more!

I am hogging a lot of band posting all these pics. :o If it gets too much I can always delete em.

The cenotes are sometimes half and half. You get a blurry haze of visibility when you go through the salt/fresh mix. The Yucatan is the best place in the world for cenote diving. There are thousands of them and most of them are still unmapped.

No wreck diving for me either, I'd do it in a heartbeat though.

My Mom and step-Dad are retiring down here and looking to buy a dive shop or start their own. (They invited me to come along and I said HECK YES!!) I sold my house in NC and drove down here. This is why I'm going for instructor status. To work here legally as an American you have to have an instructor card. Even then it's hard. I'll just invest a small amount in the business to be a minority shareholder and that'll allow me to get 1 year visas instead of the six month one I have now. It expires in early December, but I can get an extension if we don't have a shop by then.

I'm all over Cozumel, we have two dogs here and can't leave them, so when my Mom comes down from Colorado later this month, I'm heading over. I'll check out Palancar as well as Punta Sur.

I'll check in to your shop, but my brother used a shop named Eldora Divers, that had big steel tanks for longer bottom times. Most of the time my computer tells me to come up before my air supply does. Today we went to a place called PaaMul, started at 100ft. went down a little wall to about 124ft. and slowly worked our way back to 50 to 60 ft. After an hour I still had 1400psi but me my divemaster and my stepdad were all so close to deco we had to come up.
Stinking deco!!!!!

I am not certified and have never used nitrox. It would be nice to be able to stay under longer. I have done one really deep dive in Belize. I got to dive the blue hole and went to a depth of 168 feet to see the stalactites. The Blue hole was full of gray reef sharks and very cool. At 25 ' the dive masters dropped extra tanks for anyone running low on air. Had to stay at 25' for like a half hour after 8 minute at depth. We went down through the old cave section and then up to 140' to look at the sharks. I don't think I will ever need to go that deep again. There is so much more to see in shallower water IMO.

You are very close to Belize as well. I would recommend going there as well!

It's a 4 hour dirve more or less to Belize from here. When my tourist visa expires I plan to go there for a week or so to dive and maybe to renew the visa at the Mexico Belize border.

Maybe I'll stop at Mahual to go over to Banco Chinchurro. That's the very bottom of the Yucatan, no big fishing boats, it's supposed to be great diving as well.

Very cool! I just finished a vacation In Huatulco Mexico and did two dives. It was has been heavily fished and did not have many big fish and the coral was not very colorful. Still it was nice to get in some warmer water with outstanding visibility. I did get to see a spotted eagle and some other cool smaller fish.

Well I've only been to Key Largo, (have about 20+ dives) and compared to places like Bonaire its crappy because the reef has been so messed up by pecticides/runoff from golf courses (I hate golf :tsk: ). On a nice June/July day it can be really nice though.its good for experience. I don't have any pics sadly.

The diving in Venice (so I hear from my dad, I personally haven't been yet) is really bad. The vis is so low you can only see a foot or so, and this is all the time. But the treasures you can find is the whole point. Then there's always the risk that you wont' find anything at all.
When I get back Monday I'll let you all know what I hauled in (hopefully something big!)

Wow!! That's good. I can only do an hour. I am 6'-4" using more air and have to really relax so that I can stay under with out burning through my air too fast. I didn't start diving until 2002. I'm almost to 100 dives.

I'm 6'3" 215. I still consider myself a beginner. My air consumption was good from the get go. Relaxing is the key, that and not moving any parts of your body any more than you have to. It's mostly drift diving here so I just ride the current and steer with my fins. After descent I pop a little air in my BCD and I never play with it after that. I'm not in horrible shape, but not in great shape either.

I am far from living right:laugh: I drink and smoke, and love junk food. I just got lucky. I'm a single guy with no kids, and just decided to come try living this life. If I fall flat on my face, I was an electrician so I could come back to the states and get a job pretty much anywhere. Hopefully I won't have to do that. I'm counting on getting that Instructor Card. From what my instructor told me, with that, you can find a job pretty much anywhere in the world, that diving is available.

Of course I didn't have my camera. Noone at the shop believes us about the octopus. Only me and 1 divemaster were there. The vis is clearing up so I'll take the camera out soon.

LOL ! I know it was probably the Sam Adams crack. Sorry about that! You should know that I have the highest respect for Denver and it is a great honor to compete against such a great franchise. I come from the school of thought that to diminish ones competition is to diminish ones own accomplishments. I'll check the video when my internet is a little faster.

I'm actually doing the divemaster now, here in Puerto. I've been helping with discover students, openwater and advanced classes as well.

Sometimes I even guide a small group of certified divers. I'm thinking of going to Utila for the Instructor course though.

I went to Cozumel saturday. Went to Palancar Gardens and another wall after that...I forget the name. It was incredible. On one dive I saw 4 nurse sharks, 5 turtles, and 3 of those splendid toad fishes. I actually found the first toadfish and had to show the divemaster, he swam right by it and missed it. I gave him crap for letting a Gringo find stuff and show it to him.

I'm going back tomorrow for 4 days to a place called Aldora divers. They have 120 steel tanks and do two tank dives for about 80 bucks.

If I can go 75 minutes on a 80 aluminum tank I'm probably going to outdive my computer well before I run out of air. It'll be cool to find out.

I'll take the camera this time and bring back some goodies (I hope).

Good luck in Sundays game I probably will be diving instead of watching the game. Hopefully no injuries to either of us.

This was taken at Maraciabo Reef. Only advanced divers go here, and only then, when the ocean is flat and the current isn't too strong. There's whirlpools that can form and suck you down to dangerous levels.

I'm at 155 ft.

My personal limit. The other side of that ledge it just drops down into what seems like oblivion. I had a buddy with me so we were safe, but wow, it was a little scary.

No. I'm back on the mainland. I'm a short 40 minute boat ride away though. My sister is coming down in a week, and she's never dove there, so we're going to do a 3 or 4 day trip over there while she is here.

I'll make sure to take the camera again. There were some hammerheads around the south end of the island. Hopefully I can get some shots of them.

Supposedly there are whale sharks migrating up from Honduras and Belize. They go to the top of the carribean where it meets the Gulf of Mexico to spawn. We're in the flight pattern so maybe I'll get lucky and see some of them.

Thanks bro. It's a blast taking them. Sometimes I think the camera is a curse. On one morning dive I saw a hammerhead shark...later that day I saw a pod of dolphins...of course I didn't have the camera.

The tourists that were with me on both dives acted like it was no big deal. I wanted to slap them all upside the head. Some people go a lifetime and never see the kind of stuff they saw.

Thanks for the compliments. I keep looking for something none of you have seen yet. :salute:

Very nice video footage. My next endeavor. I'd love to take video.

That was a pretty good sized nurse shark. I know you didn't get much of the second shark but that looked like a bull shark in mid water at the end of the video. Pretty cool. Was that at Cozumel or in California?

I just got done entertaining my sister for a couple weeks I haven't been around here much. We did go back over to Cozumel. Twice actually. Once me and her, and then last week we took her boyfriend over there as well.

This was their first time over there and they got to dive...probably only Sanluis will know these spots....The Devil's throat!!! Maraciabo!!!! for the two deep dives. Then we did Punta Tunich-a really fast drift dive and one dive we went from Santa Rosa and drifted al the way through it to Cedral. It was incredible.

I was up late sharing music with a friend, I'll get more pictures uploaded later. Got a couple decent turtle shots.

Just a little feel good story I stumbled across

For years, Marge Frisch would hear the wonderful stories and see the beautiful photos about Grand Cayman from her daughter Linda Martin.

Marge had always wanted to visit such a magical place, but her husband’s health challenges kept her from venturing very far from her Sun City Center, Florida home.

This week for the first time, Marge had the opportunity to visit Grand Cayman and took full advantage of the chance.

Like many people, her ultimate goal has been to go scuba diving and experience the underwater world that blesses these islands. The only difference with Marge is that she is 81 years old.

Well, when it turns in to "one of those days", let me know. I can find you lodging and of course take you out to blow bubbles.

I've taken many an Englishman out diving here, but it seems like it might be cheaper and closer for you to go to the Red Sea. The water is a little colder there, but the diving is fantastic from what I hear. ...And yes, unfortunately it is not a cheap hobby.

Very nice! I think I'm going there or Curacao like the first week in December. Tell your Pop congrats on the certs, I haven't emailed him in a good while. I hope he's doing well. It sounds like he is. The nitrox course is great just because it allows you so much more time to stay at deeper depths. With those two certs, he's set up to go to 130ft, and the nitrox is an added bonus. It's just basically a richer O2 blend than the normal compressed air which is 21% O2. He probably used 30 or 32%.

If he's enjoying himself, he could do the rescue course next. I learned a lot from that course. It's a little more physically demanding, but it makes you a better diver. maybe I should just drop him a line.

We need to go dive SR. Get your ass down here sometime.
