View Full Version : Scoping the Broncos

. At the beginning of this upcoming year, the Denver Broncos wont be up in neon lights. No one is expecting much from them. They wont be anyones preseason favorites to win it all. They are a 7-9 team who didnt have a single sexy pick in the offseason, and no one is talkin much about the orange and blue.
Ok, we've seen some flashes out of Jay Cutler they'll say. Champs still there. They got a good kid in the draft. Shanahans on the bubble. I dont see them competing much, but Mike will get them back on track sooner or later...........

I love a bunch of suckers.

Color my glasses orange and blue and ridicule me if I wave my Broncos flag on weekdays for fun, but I dont have the same pessimistic view of the Broncos upcoming season. We dont run a dummy organization around here and theres a reason we've been winning for so long. This is the year Ive seen some very prudent moves, and a lot of 'BALLERS' brought into the practice facility. No sexy FAs. No sexy draft picks.

BALLERS.

Keeping it to our division, the Sandy Eggo Chargers are the reigning chumps. Jokeland has a young QB with a howitzer for an arm who is the size of a panzer, and a player many viewed as the top player in this years draft, Darren McFadden. The Chefs put together a very nice draft, but lost the best player on their roster as well. What did the Broncos do?

Shhhhh.:listen:

Ryan Clady. Lets start where it counts. Theres whispers in the Broncos halls. Clady comes in starting, and probably wont relinquish the starting LT role for the next ten to twelve years. Nothin sexy about that huh? Pencil in Kuper or Pears at RT and..........um scuse me........you guys know Ryan Harris? Third round pick last year? Remember......sweet feet.......back probs......needs to be a little stronger? Dont pencil in Kuper or Pears so fast. Harris has raised his hand up high and said, 'Can I say sumthin?' You sure can my man. What you got to say?
Im gonna be watching this offensive line this training camp. If Harris agrees to 'terms and conditions' for playing on the offensive line, this line could be sumthin to write home about. A massive, fleet of foot, zone blocking line the likes of which has never been seen in the hallowed winds of Mile High. Its enough to make John Elway drool while considering makin a comeback.
A dominating offensive line in the hands of Mike Shanahan (Im not even going to get into the new WRs) would mean trouble for a whole bunch of people. Like say, 31 NFL teams. (Im not even going to get into the whole Jay Cutler 'third year under Shanny' thing) We easily move the ball between the 20s. That is not going to change, and with a hugely improved Oline, its only going to get easier. But its going to be the redzone that the real difference is felt. Its there that we can now move into 'Road Grader' mode. Road grading in the redzone leads to easy, wide open passes.......QB rollouts........fullback passes........corner fades.........quarterback draws..............etc, etc. Lets dust off the pages of the 97-98 playbooks. :coffee:

My knee is bouncin up and down feverishly. It always does that when Im excited.

We wont be comin to the LOS with any sexy picks this year.

But our sleeves will be rolled up.:salute:

BRONCOS BABY.

I've been on record as saying that I think we will go 8-8, however that's because I'm not sure how fast the team will gel. I do however believe it's possible for this team to make a playoff run.

I cant blame the optismists for being excited about what this season could bring.

That being said, I just dont have that good feeling yet.

So much Potential, so much still unrealized.

Who is it again who replaced Kubiak? (no need to answer, I know and wish I didnt).

Will the D line be able to stop little old ladies with runarounds this year?

Will the LB shuffle be complete? Let poor DJ play a spot for crying out loud. And to that, how can we hang our hopes on a specials teams player who couldnt crack the top 3/4 in seattle.

O line with a rookie on the blind side, a center that is close to collecting retirement benifits( Nalen is superb at his spot, but wow hes getting old), and a hodge podge mixing it up that are still very young and somewhat untested, another jumble of mix and match WR's, a gaggle of Backs, none with a bag of play time.

Im excited for the season to start, simply because win or lose, I love this team. I see a twinkle, a glimmer of light, for what this team MAY become, although I dont think this is our season to shine.

10-6 with some young guys emerging and some positivity into '09 I'd be *ecstatic*.

Then again, if Shanny can take that group of scrubs in '06 to the AFC Championship game...anything can happen. That was some coaching job.

That said, the team goes into next season leagues behind the Chargers talent and experience-wise so one can only expect so much. When the Broncos stop getting blown out by the Bolts I'll change my tune. There's a hell of a long ways to go and to say otherwise is pure orange optimism.

Rookie, yes. Worries? No. If he starts, hes it. They arent going to start him if he cant protect Jay. Pass rushing wise, he was the best in the draft. Jake Long was the most ready to play and contribute, but Clady will be the man in the end imo. Clady is taylor made for us. As for Nails, there are a number of options at center should he not be able to hold off the other guys......including Hamilton.

Lets hope for some real coaching this coming training camp. Shanny is up for it and if anyone can get it done, I believe its him. I'll be watching this line, and hoping for the best. One thing I know for sure: Its better than last years line.

When the Broncos stop getting blown out by the Bolts I'll change my tune.

Won't have to wait long... the 2nd game this season

I am not worried about the offense at all. With Marshall catching some after the "accident", Scheffler running some routes, Young believing he is the man, and Cutler feeling good for the first time in his life and on top of that 3rd year. Like mentioned before we move the ball but just could not punch it into the endzone. We will this year.

Special team is a concern and it can cost you games but not as much as a bad defense. Would our ST have helped out with the blowouts by the Chargers NO!!! ST is only a factor in close games.

Now about our D. Robertson is always going to be hurt. He did well with the Jets but it will never get better; just worse. Lynch is a leader but can he lead by example anymore?? Will DJ adjust back to his true position or will he have to relearn it?? Too many questions.

10 and 6 is not out of the question. The issue is whether that will be good enough to grab a wild card spot, But this year the Broncos should at least be quite competitive regardless of the final season record. Even with the sparkies.....

We have a favorable schedule, and I believe this team will get stronger with each game. Its gonna be whos playing best in December and January, not September.

Most of all, we need to have a healthy year, and get some continuity.

As we could see from the Cutler-Stokely hookups last year, Jay can get it done even with new veterans like D. Jack and Colbert.

We also have Daniel Graham to post over Clady should he have any rough spots this year.

Everyone seems to be high on what they see in the OTAs. Theres good chemistry being built, and players are hanging out with each other.

I like flying under the radar, and the game Im looking forward to is the one against SD.

Initially (pre draft) I saw the team potentially being 1-6 at the break because of the schedule and then more or less reversing that for the rest of the year. finishing 7-9 same as this year..

I'm inclined right now to think we may not be that bad at the break but I:m going to hold off till mid to late training camp.. As I got caught up n all the forum enthusiasm last year and allowed myself to overestimate them only to have them do what I initially thought they would..

Lets hope that your correct but I did not see anything on that schedule that you are being a real favorable one....

Well the Metrics show that the o-line has NEVER been the problem, and I have it on great authority that it was all Chris Myers fault.

I'm with dogfish on this one, I'll believe the imaginary short yardage/goal line issues are solved when they are no longer a figment of my imagination......

I remember you were very cautious about the Broncos being succesful last season, because you thought there were too many new players who'd need time to gel, and new schemes that players would have to learn. And yes, I was one of the over-enthusiastic ones. :D

Anyway, 2 questions, though: Did you anticipate that our rush defense under Bates would be close to the worst in the league, and did you anticipate all the injuries to the key positions, specially OL, RB, and WR? I think those had more to do with the losses than anything else.

I was also pretty impressed by the way Cutler was able to immediately utilize Stokley; heck, he even hit Martinez once or twice, but Martinez had a drop or two.

On the SD game, what boggles the mind is that KC's been a pretty bad team last season, yet they beat SD. KC was only average against the run, but that leads me to believe that if our rush defense could be average, we have a pretty good shot against good teams.

Metrics schemtrics.

If the oline doesnt block, how can a runningback have accurate metrics?

Its just a fancy way of telling you how a player plays in each given circumstance.

Id think you could grade a line out by A-B-C-D or F........and have the same thing.

Anyway, in my opinion, which aint much........the O-LINE at the GO-LINE couldnt push a slug off a quarter.

No metrics.

I thought the defense would be better than it was.. I liked Bates and his system It has worked good elsewhere. the players did not buy into it and mikey had no Patience for it..

I always factor in some injuries.. but it was the youth on the team, all of the changes, and the schedule that made me think it would be a poor season..

I know that no one wants to hear it but the team was IMO worse than the 7-9 record indicated..

4 FGs away from being 3-13 I know that a Win is a s win is a win.. but had it not been for Elam and shenanigans with calling timeouts and such, well our W-L record would have been less than 7-9..

So this years team in my eyes is starting out 3-13 not 7-9 and then I factor in how the other teams on our schedule did in the draft and how things are gelling for us and that is how I make my predictions..

Before the draft, I think I said between 5-11 and 7-9 at best for 2008..

Other than clady and Robertson I do not see all that much improvement in personnel.. With clady being a rookie and not knowing the play book It should be a slight upgrade over Lepsis and graham..

The DL was flat terrible last year.. no other way to describe it.. Robertson playing part time should help it but I do not see a vast improvement there..

Now this is as we speak lots of thing can and most likely will change so I;ll wait till the last preseason game to make my predictions..

Those first 6-7 games are IMO gonna be the back breaker for this young squad..
