I hope Denver is able to work out a contract extension with Ramsey. I know some people don't like him as quarterback but I think if Ramsey had to play for an extended period of time (may the Lord forbid that ever happening) our offense would still be in capable hands. By the way who the heck is Cullen Finnerty?

Extension in the works for Broncos QB Ramsey

June 6, 2008

The Broncos are in talks with backup QB Patrick Ramsey’s agent, James E. Sexton, about a contract extension, the way we hear it. Ramsey is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million deal. Though he saw significant playing time in only one game last season — Nov. 4 against Detroit, when he went 29-for-46 with one touchdown and an interception — Denver has been impressed with his work ethic and is committed to keeping him around, according to sources. Ramsey has the talent — he was the Redskins’ first-round pick in 2002 — and he has displayed some smarts, as well. He gives head coach Mike Shanahan an important level of security behind Jay Cutler, and the Broncos don’t have any other game-tested quarterbacks on their roster. Shanahan would like to develop Darrell Hackney and Cullen Finnerty into sound backups, but that task will take some time as neither has played in a regular-season game.

I'm a big fan of having Ramsey as a backup. He's a talented young vet that has starting experience and is comfortable in his role as a backup. He reminds me of a more experienced Kubiak.

I do not think anyone had more experience as a back up than Gary

Aslong as Ramsey is on the bench im happy with that. Good back up as far as smarts i assume. If he ever had to play 2 or more games i would be worried.

I meant to say more experience on the field than Gary, but a great option for a backup.:D

Well put Ziggy. He really seems well rounded and understands how important his job is, but understands that most people hope they never hear his named called in a game.

Patrick Ramsey SUCKS.... We should be extending Brandon Marshall, or DJ Williams contracts, not Patrick Ramsey.

With the lack of availability of quality backup QBs, Ramsey's a good investment for a backup. He already knows the system, and he will be comfortable backing up Jay.

This was taken from an old article on 2008's free agent QB's .... http://www.nflminute.com/2007/12/19/2008s-top-free-agents-quarterbacks/

1. Derek Anderson
2. Rex Grossman
3. Daunte Culpepper
4. Josh McCown
5. Cleo Lemon
6. Quinn Gray
7. Ken Dorsey
8. Ryan Fitzpatrick
9. Drew Henson
10. Jared Lorenzen
11. Seneca Wallace

Anderson's no longer a backup, so among those guys, the only ones I'd take over Ramsey as a backup would probably be Josh McCown and Quinn Gray.

Ramsey's a good value for a backup.

Being a Tulane student, I am more than happy to have fellow Greenie Patrick Ramsey on the roster! I just hope he never has to play! :D

What exactly are you looking for in a backup QB? Ramsey could start for teams like Chicago and Kansas City. Part of building a Super Bowl contender is building depth. Ramsey has the talent to start on a few teams, the attitude and mindset to be happy and contribute in a posititve way in a backup role, and is a great character guy. Re-signing him would be a great move.

I like Ramsey as our back up, the one game he played last year, he & Marshall were about the only ones that put on any kind of performance...............

At this stage of his career, we need a veteran backup for Cutler, and I can't think of many that would provide anything more than Ramsey does, especially without whining he should be the starter.............

It's really important that we have a good backup with Jay being diabetic... Ramsey's chances of seeing some playing time are higher than the average backup, because Jay could be out of the game within seconds, literally.

Same here. I like having Ramsey on the team and if had too assume the starting role because of and injury to Jay I think the offense is still in capable hands. However, I would rather Jay not get hurt.

We should sign Ramsey for another 3-4 years. In the meantime we need to keep looking for a young guy to back up Jay for the real long-term. Sources could include our own practice squad, the draft and free agency.

Jay still has upwards of 10-15 years in his career potentially. I'd like to find someone who can be his caddy for the long-haul and still be young enough to be in his prime but already seasoned once Jay is done playing many, many years hence.

don't you know? we're supposed to have a backup QB who's just as good as our starter. . . . because there are so many great QBs just sitting around waiting to be picked up. . . .

In this day and age I don't think you'll find a guy back up quarterback that stays with you for 10 years or more.

they are indeed rare but some folks just like the organization also.. Know they will get to play but not always have the pressure on them.. Some realize while they can be a great back up they we never be starter material on a super team..

Why would a really good QB that could be on a perennial super bowl team want to start on a loser that you get the crap beat out of you on a weekly basis..

Not sure what Ramsey is gonna make but most folks if they invest it wisely do not need 4 mil per year to live..

Some Like Gary knew what hey could do and perhaps had a plan while backing up John of getting into coaching. Who would you rather learn from kiffin or mikey?

Kubiak is from the era prior to free agency. Had free agency existed in Kubiak's playing days I think he could have started for a lot of other teams and I think there is a very good chance he would not have stayed the Broncos as a career back up quarterback.

Perhaps your correct but think about what his long term goals may have been..

Now I could see him bailing on reeves but once mikey was involved setting at eh foot of the master got him where he is today..

I thought Ramsey's plan was going to be testing the free agent waters for a chance to compete for a starting job, if they get him to sign an extension that would be good news, imo.

With the uncertainty surrounding Cutler's diabetes, an experienced backup is important, and Ramsey is an ideal backup......
