Read about it here. (http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.ph...4&storyID=8075)

It's nice to hear that Hartley is making the most of the opportunity. As much as I hate the Sooners, he's not too bad and has a pretty good leg on him. It'd be sweet if he and Kern as rookies could come in and start!

Also, kudos to Marshall for catching that pass -- we know Darius Watts couldn't have.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos concluded the first week of team camp Friday morning at Dove Valley, bringing them yet another week closer to the start of training camp. The atmosphere on the field rivaled that of training camp with the offense and defense dialing up the intensity on each play.

NALEN'S KNEE SCOPED

Broncos center Tom Nalen underwent arthroscopic surgery Friday to repair cartilage in his left knee. Nalen, who tore his bicep against San Diego last year ending his season, is expected to be back in 2-4 weeks. Nalen is longest teured Bronco on the roster, this being his 15th season with the club.

"He should be full go and feeling good by the time we get to camp," said Head Coach Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan said typically someone can come back from this type of surgery in two weeks but because this is the offseason the team can be extra cautious.

"He should be back and ready to go in two or three weeks, in the season probably two weeks, but now probably about a month," Shanahan said.

With Nalen out, Casey Wiegmann has been handling the snaps at center.

HARTLEY HAMMERS THEM HOME

One Bronco that saw more field time than usual on Friday was kicker Garrett Hartley. Hartley a college free agent signing out the University of Oklahoma took all the special team field goal reps during practice. Hartley, who is one of the two kickers on the roster vying field goal duties with the departure of long-time Broncos' kicker Jason Elam. He said the pressure is there regardless of how many kicks you get a practice.

"There’s always pressure everyday, regardless if I only have four kicks or today, 24," Hartley said. "We just have to build on it, and I have to roll with it."

Matt Prater, the only other kicker on the Broncos' roster, saw time with the club late last season as a kickoff specialist. Prater netted over a 67 yard average on his kickoffs.

"Prater has the strongest leg I have ever contended with, and he’s very accurate," Hartley said. "It’s definitely going to be great competition."

Hartley, who was connecting on field goals of 50 yards and beyond during practice, said Elam set a high standard for kickers in Denver.

"The guy is a legacy," he said. "If anything, it’s definitely big shoes to fill. Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to do so."

OBSERVATIONS

- Friday's practice was another opportuntiy for the running backs to audition to be the starter. Andre Hall and Selvin Young saw a bulk of the carries. Veteran Michael Pittman and rookies Anthony Alridge and Ryan Torain all saw reps at the running back position as well. Mike Bell, Peyton Hillis and Cecil Sapp each took reps at fullback.

- Wide receiver Marquay McDaniel made a magnificant catch during 7 on 7 drills by reaching back over his left shoulder to catch a ball that was thrown behind him. Both the offense and the defense erupted when McDaniel made the grab.

- Wide receiver Brandon Marshall kept busy at practice by playing shadow defense during the receiver drills. Marshall also participated in receiver drills attempting to catch the ball one-handed. Marshall's teammates didn't let him off the hook though, yelling "drop" on a missed catch. Marshall got the last laugh though by reeling in a 50-yard bomb one handed to close out the drill.

I'm not sure what the Marshall comment actually means. Can he use both hands or not? Did he catch the ball with one hand because he can only use one hand? WTF?

I guess he's still messed up a bit. Has anyone heard anything new on his prognosis? Last I heard was there was no feeling in his hand, or the vein was a problem...

Or, something.

I'm sure the staff isn't letting him use both hands.

He needs to make sure that arm is healthy, and not press any or be urgent about coming back.

I'm surprised the coaching staff doesn't tie his arm to his body, so he doesn't "react" to the ball with both hands, as in a natural habit.

He's not in a cast anymore. Somebody posted a picture of him at camp with him clinching a glove in his right hand. It's looking like he will be alright.

I'm really wondering if Aldridge is going to find a place on this team. He is an exciting talent that would open the doors for creativity in a big way!

Guy was hitting 50 yarders. Hope he does this consistantly. But it is alot of competition going on at that position. I love it.

i wish someone would confirm that prater was really kicking as well as he said he was. when it comes to kickers, it doesn't take much for me to pick who i root for, but i just look at hartley's picture, and can't help but root for prater lol. if hartley wins the job, i'll be glad to have him though.

i also like prater's big leg. i know hartley can boot 'em as well, but prater is said to have a VERY strong leg, as we saw last year on his kickoffs. if he can get the consistency, then crazy big leg is always a nice weapon to have.
