Boise State has given the Mountain West Conference a 10th program.

Boise State is leaving the Western Athletic Conference, a league the Broncos have dominated for a decade in football, the MWC confirmed with a statement Friday.

"We are pleased and excited to welcome Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference," commissioner Craig Thompson said in the news release. "Since our inception just 11 short years ago, the Mountain West has experienced tremendous success, and the addition of Boise State will further enhance that strength. The MWC continues to strategize regarding potential membership scenarios and bringing Boise State into the Conference is an important part of that evolution."

Boise State becomes the second institution to join the Mountain West in the past six years, after TCU was added in 2005. The conference was founded in 1998 with eight members.

The Mountain West also includes Brigham Young, Utah, Air Force, Wyoming, UNLV, San Diego State, New Mexico and Colorado State.

"It will be a privilege to compete and partner with such a successful group of member institutions," Boise State president Robert Kustra said in a statement. "This move is in the best interests of Boise State's future, and the university is excited to be part of one of the nation's most outstanding conferences."

Thompson had said Monday the Mountain West would hold off on expansion until the dust settles in the other conferences.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson figured Boise State was bound to bolt for the Mountain West. So much so that as the WAC board of directors and athletic directors assembled in Las Vegas for the conference's annual meeting this week, they discussed contingency plans.

The conference didn't want to be caught off guard.

"I think everyone was anticipating and expecting it," Benson said in a conference call Monday night. "All the signals out there were pointing in the direction that any invitation would come today. ... This is an unbelievably volatile period. The poker playing that is going on I think is unprecedented.

"Regardless of what changes might occur, we are poised to move forward either with our existing membership or with any membership changes that may occur."

Benson said there wasn't any bitterness toward Boise State officials at the meeting, the relationship remaining quite cordial.

The WAC is keeping its options open, too, scouring for schools. Benson said there are five or six candidates from the Football Championship Series the conference is keeping an eye on.

However, Benson wouldn't elaborate on which schools might potentially be in the mix.

"Regardless of what the Mountain West might do, or Boise State might do, the WAC is going to continue to be a credible and recognizable conference," Benson said.

Broncos football coach Chris Petersen, who has compiled a 49-4 record and won three WAC titles in four years, said Monday the decision doesn't change anything about his plans for next season.

"We have a very challenging non-conference and conference schedule ahead of us and we are not planning to change our goals because of today's decision," he said.

People forget that the Western Athletic Conference was the original 16-team conference but their original schools hated what it had become and broke away to form the MWC. It would be ironic to see the MWC turn into a 16-team conference if they, indeed, inhaled the leftovers of the Big XII.

Uh, TCU is already in the MWC.

I wouldn't mind adding Fresno and Baylor. When the WAC was 16 teams it was too big and the teams in the Mtn West split off. I don't know if bigger is better.

:embarrassed: I don't know why I put down TCU because I knew they were in the MWC.

I remember when the WAC was stacked with 16 teams. After all this realigning of conferences, each conference is going to have alot of teams. I know this has to do with the BCS and not having to go to the playoff system, so the 'Boise St's of the NCAA have a chance at the BCS title and MWC will become a contender. Plus the Big 10 and Pac 10 are going to have to a Conference Championship Game.

And here's a thought....the Rose Bowl 2015......Big 16 Champion vs Pac 16 Champions.....Nebraska vs Texass! :ohwell:

BTW, BigDaddy, my wife got an assignment to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, so I'll be visiting the Alaskan Brewing Company:D

Awesome. Alaska is a cool place. I really enjoyed my short visit there. I haven't been able to convince the wife to move up there, yet...

I really don't understand this move by Boise State. It doesn't bring them any closer to playing for a national championship, but every year when they go undefeated, you hear them bitching about not getting to play for the national championship. So why make the move the Mountain West and not make a move towards the Pac 10?

They've proven they can hang with teams like Oregon and Oklahoma, so why not do something that actually gives you the legitimate shot to play for a title???

I think this is pretty much a step backwards and an ill advised one at that.

When Boise St. made the move, Utah, BYU, and TCU where in the Mtn. West. Now Utah went to the PAC-10 and the Mtn. West basically replaced Utah with Boise St. Last year when Utah, TCU, and BYU were all top 20 teams, many college football talking heads had it ranked as high as the 3rd or 4th best conference in the country. That is why Boise St. made the move. IMHO, they would have been awarded an automatic BCS entry if Utah would have remained in the conference.

Bosie St. Has been wanting to join the MWC for a while. Talked with the Bosie St. AD back when all this went down and they are very excited about the move. They feel the MWC is closer then the WAC to a possible auto bid. Losing Utah hurts but the bottom of the conference either way is going to have to take a step forward. TCU, BYU, BSU, solid football base.

Baylor is a finesse program with some solid athletes students being a medical college and all. I'd think it more suited for the Pac-10.

CU is about as far east as I would want to see a team out of the Pac 12, I was actually hoping they'd only have teams west of the Rockies but the Buffs have a history of playing Pac 10 teams!

I thought Orangehoof said at one time the one reason why Boise St would not be considered for the Pac 10 was because it had something to do with their medical schooling and didn't meet the requirements to belong in the Pac 10!!
