CBS Cancels "Ghost Whisperer," Could Be Picked Up By ABC
Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) - Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Melinda Gordon could see the dead in “Ghost Whisperer,” but fans of the show nor industry insiders could see the show’s death coming. CBS surprisingly cancelled the show after five seasons of it being a consistent Friday night timeslot winner.
Looking to revamp nearly its entire schedule, “Ghost Whisperer” was unceremoniously cancelled along with other established CBS programming, like “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Cold Case,” as well as “Gary Unmarried,” “Accidentally on Purpose,” “Miami Medical,” and “Numb3rs.”
CBS opted to remain with the similarly themed “Medium,” which they picked up last year after it was cancelled by NBC. It was then paired with “Ghost Whisperer” on Friday nights. In its timeslot, "Ghost Whisperer" averaged a 2.1 rating and 7 share with adults 18-49, and 8.2 million viewers.
While the news left fans shocked, there are already whispers that the show could be picked up ABC. “Ghost Whisperer” is a co-production between ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios and ABC already owns the ancillary rights to the show, making a deal more feasible.
Luckily for “Ghost Whisperer” fans, ABC is reportedly considering the idea. According to Variety, the heads at ABC have expressed interest in the drama, putting the show back in its Friday night home on network TV. The show would act as a lead-in for its new show, “Body of Proof,” which stars Dana Delaney as a medical examiner who helps solve murder cases.
While ABC might have an interest in the Jennifer Love Hewitt-starrer, its experience in picking up NBC’s “Scrubs” may have them more cautious to pick up other network’s cancellations. It too cancelled “Scrubs” after two seasons on the network.
What could be the series finale of "Ghost Whisperer," an episode titled "The Children's Parade" airs Friday, May 21st at 8pm.
