Denver's number is $4,877,060.

According to numerous experts, the Kansas City Chiefs had the best draft. Now, they have to pay for those players.

The Chiefs received the highest rookie pool numbers by the NFL, a source said on Wednesday. With 12 draft choices -- two first-rounders taken in the top 15 -- the Chiefs have a rookie pool of $8,221,790, tops in the league. Not only do they have two first-rounders to sign, but they have a second and three thirds.

Even though agents and teams get around the rookie pool with contract escalators, post first-year option bonuses and one-time incentives, the rookie pool was created to somehow slot the signings of draft choices by the position they were selected. Each selection in the draft is given a value, which is a predetermined cap number. All rookies, including undrafted rookies, have to fit within the assigned rookie pool.

The Atlanta Falcons ended up with the second highest total at $7,918,670. They had four selections among the first 68 picks, including two first-rounders. They had six picks in the first 98.

The Miami Dolphins signed Michigan tackle Jake Long to a five-year, $57.75 million deal that had a $3 million cap number. That contract left $3.538,400 for the other eight draft choices, which include two seconds and a third.

The lowest total went to the Cleveland Browns, who had only five choices, none in the first three rounds. Their rookie pool is only $1.789,980 million.

With the fifth overall pick, the Chiefs took LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, who some had proclaimed the best player in the 2008 draft.

The Chiefs followed that up by taking Virginia offensive lineman Branden Albert of Virginia with the 15th overall selection. They likely will plug him in at tackle.

In the second round, the Chiefs went back to defense with Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Flowers and picked up Texas running back Jamaal Charles in the third round.

Yep....that's what happens when you have the best draft of the year.

I've never quite figured this out............is the rookie pool seperate to this year's salary cap, or is it included within?

I found a picture of the Chief's draft pool. I think one of the guys actually "in the pool" is Croyle, but I could be wrong.

Happens more often when you draft 15 people.

The size of the pool is not an indicator of how well you draft, just how many, and at what places.

It's more at what position and when. They drafted key players earl in the draft that play a position where the top players at that position make a lot of money.

The pool is allotted depending on the position the organization drafts, the position they pick in proportion to what round, and the going salary in the NFL for that position.

You have to figure both the chefs and faid will be top 10 again if not top 5. With the money the faid blew in FA this year they could find themselves in trouble down the road.

it is include. There is no separate cap. What this means is that KC will most likely be forced to cut veterans and have a lot of first and second years starting.

KC has already done that with a lot of guys. Herm the Sperm said going in that he wanted at least six starters out of this draft - Starting immediately.

Sperm had said at the Senior Bowl to NFL Channel guys that he expect that 80% of his final roster would be guys with 3 years are less experience. That team is going to be bad.

Rookie pools are determined by the number of rookies you have. Since the Chiefs had the most and had many in the higher rounds, they get a higher rookie pool.

Dortoh is awesome.

Could this be considered a suicide note from Herm?

First of all I could not agree with you more

Whats really going to be the long term end of the chefs is when they realize they have a young club and no future at qb they are years away. What makes it even better is my ex-wife is a huge chefs fan.

I figure he was laying the ground work to ensure that he doesn't get the blame when the Chefs go 0-16.

Salary cap is just that all the players salaries have to fit underneath it..

But then I think in years old it was only those top 53 players, on the active roster that may have changed with the latest contract though.

IIRC, it means they will have 8+ million tied up (escalating annually) in 15 people, and the rest of the team will share in the remiining (carry the two, drop the 1, divide by 6, add 3, take th ePi out and use the sine) 75 mil or so.... If Diaper Boy has a big chunk of that, and B. Frail has a chunk, and the WR has a chunk - escalating annually - it could come back to be an issue down the road. Drafting that many may or not be a good thing. I would predict that a number of those selected from the fourth on will either be cut or put on the PS if they can get them there....

Anytime the mullets have problems is a great day.....

Figured it's based on how many you draft and how high they were drafted. Meaning having more high round picks will net a larger pool.

I just hope we get Clady signed before camp. I forget who his agent is, but I heard mention that he has a rep for getting his guys to camp on time.
