The Denver Broncos auditioned linebacker Nick Greisen on Wednesday, a possible precursor to him rejoining the team.

According to the Denver Post, a decision on Greisen will hinge on the condition of his surgically repaired knee. Greisen was on injured reserve last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Griesen would figure into the equation as a special-teams contributor and provide depth at linebacker.

Greisen, 30, has previous stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants.

He was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL draft out of Wisconsin.

We added him in April 2009, he went through the off-season program with us, and then blew out his knee in the first week of training camp. And that sucks, just about any way you look at it.

Hope he's OK and gets added again.

The Denver Broncos have signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Nick Greisen. The ninth-year pro spent last season on injured reserve with the Broncos after signing as a free agent on April 29, 2009. The former University of Wisconsin star has played for the New York Giants, who drafted him in 2002, Jacksonville and Baltimore.

I think its a good signing, especially special teams wise so long as he's made a full recovery from the season ending injury he suffered last year. On the surface it seems like a move that Martindale would have pushed for. Greisen played his best ball in Baltimore under Ryan, a defense the Broncos will likely be close relatives to under "Wink". He should have a good grasp on the changes Martindale will likely try and introduce, and you would have to imagine a lot of LB's signed would have Martindale's stamp of approval as our previous LB coach. I like the signing but I don't think this means he'll 100% make the team. There's plenty of competition at the ILB spot now with UDFA's, but I think if he's not making his case for position against Haggen, Larsen, and Ayodele, he will be for the spot behind DJ.

He won't make the final roster.

hunh. . . i didn't realize we'd ever cut him. . . was he just on a one-year deal?

anyway, solid pickup. . . when we released andra davis, i wondered if they might have griesen pencilled in to take some snaps at ILB. . . BBL's right about him having experience in the 3-4 with the vultures, and he's been part of solid defenses in jacksonville and new york. . .

not a special guy, but he's a vet who knows what he's doing. . . we'll see who makes the final roster, but between griesen, haggan, larsen, ayodele and woodyard, at least we have some competent options. . . it's still an area that could use an infusion of young talent in the worst way, but it's also one of those positions where you can get by with less. . .

you don't have to have star ILBs in the 3-4. . . they don't typically have to cover a ton of ground, and you don't need the blue chip athletes there-- you do need guys who'll work hard at what you need from them, which is playing in a phone booth, taking on blocks and making solid tackles. . . throw in a little ability to time the blitz, and you've got a functional ILB. . .

i think we've got a group of guys who can more or less handle what we'll be asking them to do, as long as the DL doesn't get run over. . .
