Former Broncos and Falcons kicker Jason Elam will announce his retirement from football on Wednesday.

Elam will sign a one-day contract with the Broncos, for whom he kicked from 1993-2007. Consistently among the highest fantasy scorers at his position over the course of his 17-year career, Elam will retire as one of the most accurate field goal kickers of his generation and the best in Broncos franchise history. His 436 field goals are good for fifth all time.

Cool! I remember Atwater did something similar after his stint with the Jets I believe.

why do his fantasy merits get mentioned as if they're viable accomplishments???

and why is that fantasy tidbit mentioned rather than this record for longest field goal???

reason number 92 why I loathe fantasy football. reason number 183 why I'm infuriated with lazy/ignorant "journalists."

I wonder if Brett Favre will sign a 1 day contract with the Packers when its all said and done

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It's hard for Broncos fans to think of Jason Elam in any colors other than orange and blue.

After all, Elam played in 236 games in Denver -- a franchise record -- and his 15 seasons as a Bronco are tied with Tom Nalen for the second-highest total in team history behind John Elway.

Now, Elam will be part of the team once again, as he will sign a one-day contract with the team in order to officially retire as a Denver Bronco.

The announcement will take place at a 2 p.m. MDT press conference in the team meeting room of the club's Dove Valley headquarters Wednesday.

"When it's all said and done, he will be remembered as one of the greatest Broncos and a player whose career achievements redefined the importance of his position," President and CEO Pat Bowlen said. "Without question, he is a Ring of Famer who deserves strong consideration for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

Elam was a big part of the reason Denver owns the longest active streak of consecutive games without being shut out in league history. The streak began in 1992, and Elam joined the team in '93. In every single contest Elam touched the field, he scored at least one point.

That's the second-longest streak in NFL history. Elam made sure the Broncos were never shut out as long as he was on the club.

Elam stands in fifth place in league history in most points scored and most field goals made, holds the league record with 16 consecutive seasons with 100 or more points and he made what is tied for the longest field goal in NFL history -- 63 yards.

Through it all, he earned three Pro Bowl selections, was voted a second-team All-Pro on three occasions and was named the NFL Special Teams Player of the Year in 2001. Most importantly, he won two Super Bowl trophies and accumulated 152 wins in a Broncos uniform -- the second-highest total in team history behind Elway.

"I am thrilled that Jason is retiring as a Bronco," Elway said. "He was a great contributor to the organization as well as the community. There has not been a more clutch kicker in the history of the NFL. He was a great competitor and an invaluable piece to our championship teams."

Though he spent the past two seasons in Atlanta, Elam's influence reached the current Broncos squad in the form of Matt Prater.

Prater and Elam spent the end of the 2007 season together in Denver, as Prater served as a kickoff specialist.

"In the short time I worked with Jason, I learned a lot about being a professional both on and off the field," Prater said. "He was a great guy to look up to and the perfect example to follow. He is a Hall-of-Fame kicker who was one of the best to play the game."

Now, after 17 seasons, Elam will officially hang up the cleats.

DenverBroncos.com will have full coverage of the announcement, including a live stream of the press conference, audio, video, photos and a top story following the event.

I DIDnt even see the fantasy part.... but agree that is distasteful to put in there. Not with such a great kicker....Elam deserves more respect than that.

however, I disagree about Fantasy football. I freaking love IT!!!

Love that game man. :salute: I remember when Elam missed his 2nd FG of the game with like 4 minutes left. I just remember falling off the couch just disgusted and felt like our season was over in week 1. Then I had a buddy call me to talk shit about him and I was like " Its not over, He'll get a chance to redeem himself" .. And sure enough he did.

Damn, I remember going nuts when that happened. And even more exciting that Gus Johnson was the announcer. He makes it that more exciting. He's called some real exciting Bronco games over the last few years on opening week. :elefant:

I was going crazy just hoping that they could get the snap off in time. I didn't even think they had enough time to run up and spike it, much less set up the field goal team and give Elam the chance to hit it. I have no idea how he pulled it off, but it was the best regular season moment I saw live, even better than us beating the Bengals IMO, although it was really close.

Great to see him coming back to Denver to finish his career with us. He was always a great player for the Broncos when it counted, and played at a high level far longer than I thought he was capable of.

Congrats to Elam on a wonderful and historic career. He was always a Bronco in my eyes. He did great things and was a great kicker for us for many years. Very happy to see him come back and retire a Bronco, just like Atwater and Sharpe did. If any kicker has ever deserved a :salute: it's Elam.

Oh, almost forgot. Here is Elams 63 yard field goal to tie for the longest field goal in NFL history.

It's a long video with the previous two downs included to show why the Broncos kicked one from that far. If you want to fast forward to the kick, go to about half way (2:45 minutes in).

There's not many kickers out there with the respect that Elam has.
I was thrilled to see the news about him retiring as a Bronco.
Congrats on an awesome career JE!

You were at both those games Live? Or do you mean Live as in watching on TV? IMO I think the Bengals game was probably my fav finish. I just remember sitting there with my head down and when Orton nearly got intercepted on 1st down, I threw the pillow and walked out of the room. Then saw it was an incomplete so I went back. And I remember I just wanted to get a big play and maybe set up for a long FG. When Stokely caught that pass I went nuts. I just remembe going crazy and my cat was attacking me. I guess I scared him. But it was an amazing finish. I really never expected that to happen at all. But I really did expect Elam to have a chance to make that FG. I thought we'd have enough time to spike it. And then when they ran everyone on the field. They were all lined up with about 5 or 4 seconds left. Gus Johnson said " I dont think they can get it off" But I thought we could. Sure was epic though.

Funny how I HATE those kind of games but when we win, they are amazing to look back on. :elefant:

That's great news to hear!! Elam was the best and I never had a doubt when he was kicking any kick!!!

Not to derail the thread but in that video I was more impressed that we were up 24-10 at the half going into that kick and 27-10 after.......don't see that often around these parts anymore.

:tsk:

PEACE!!!

6th all time in points for an nfl player.....i just wish he would sign with the team and kick 3 fg's and 8 xtra points to reach the 2000 point club !
he deserves it,but he is going on another trip to the "holy land" so i guess it's not a big deal to him to reach the 2000 point milestone (not that the broncos would bench prater until he reaches it anyway) but it would have been a cool end to his career

TV Live, I wish I could go to every Broncos game. But Gus Johnson should do every week 1 Bronco game...

Well, he might give someone a heart attack or have one himself, scratch that.

Best wishes to a great kicker. Never understood all the hate other than some people just expect perfection. When a critical kick needed to be made, he delivered far more often than he failed.

In kicker Elam's case, once a Bronco, always a Bronco

Jason Elam will be charging into retirement as a Bronco. View a slide show of Elam's career. (John Leyba, Denver Post file photo)
Kicker Jason Elam will retire as a member of the Broncos today. Elam will sign a one-day contract with the team so he can technically be a member of the Broncos when he files his retirement papers with the NFL after 17 seasons, the first 15 in Denver.

The Broncos drafted Elam in the third round in 1993, and he was a fixture here until the end of the 2007 season.

Elam was part of two Super Bowl champion teams in Denver and tied an NFL record by hitting a 63-yard field goal. He played in 236 games for the Broncos, more than any other player, and was part of 152 victories — second only to John Elway in team history.

Elam left the Broncos as a free agent in 2008 and signed with the Falcons. Atlanta released him midway through last season. Elam retires with 1,983 points and ranks fifth in made field goals (436) and fourth in PATs (675).

Elam will be eligible to be inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2015.
