You are FBI Agent Francis York, sent to the small town of Greenvale to investigate the strange murder of a woman after the body is discovered by two kids grotesquely hung from a tree. After a weird opening scene with two children and a hallucination that made you crash your car, you are quickly attacked by supernatural creatures, which seems to be deformed residents of the small town. Here begins Agent York's investigation.
First things first, the controls are abysmal and this is blatantly obvious the second you are in control of Agent York. Movement is controlled in the Resident Evil fashion and it's horribly implemented here. The original RE controlled better. He walks and moves very awkwardly and I think this was done purposely because of framerate issues. I think this wouldve been better served as a FPS-type game like Condemned. You need to use 3 buttons (both triggers and X/or Square) to shoot your slow-firing weapons vs. the repetitive enemies. The camera is a pain in the ass as it whips back and forth. A camera speed setting was badly needed. The manual aiming is loose, generally hit-and-miss and pretty useless.
DP is set up like an open world affair. You have access to the entire town for your investigation and can drive any vehicle. The car controls are awful and they drive at the speed of a monkey on a tricycle. You will find yourself driving a lot throughout the game and it shouldnt be such a clunky chore.
The graphics are generally excellent for all the main characters, but everything else looks like ass. Late lastgen games in HD at best.
The sound in the game is awful but the voice acting is actually pretty good.
I will say the game has some charm and funny dialogue. Some of the conversations are hilarious (the Tom & Jerry thing at the start made me lol). York has an imaginery friend (or something) Zach that he constantly chats with throughout the game. This I think leads to him being some sort of paranormal expert or psychic. It's an interesting twist, and the developers did a great job with the people's expressions showing that they thought York was weird. Some residents of Greenvale are eccentric and lead to some funny encounters. There's also a fishing minigame to pass the time, and if you dont shave or change your clothes, people will let you know about your dirty self.
These are the best things that can be said about this game and the only thing that saved it. I couldnt finish it (there's dozens of better games to play) but I'd imagine it'd take about 15-20 hours.
Believe it or not with a little bit of more polish and if it were handled by a better publisher with a bigger budget, this couldve actually been a much better game. At least a playable game. Even the low budget price of $20 wont save it. This game isnt worth your time.
3/10
