just saw it flash across the ticker on NFLN? Also visiting the seachickens

He used to be a pretty good kicker earlier in his career with the fish and he is probably not that much worse than a weak legged Elam at this stage in his career?

What Do you think?

this sucks. why get rid of elam for another guy that cant hit it from outside the 45??? i'd rather us start developing a young guy....just burn a 7th on a kicker this year.

denbronx i disagree.

burn a 5th. coutu or mehlhaff and don't worry about it for another 15 years.

i'll be pissed if we bring in mare.

I honestly don't think he's THAT terrible. He's been one of the best at kicking off since he's been in the league, so the least he can do is pin the opposing team down deep.

Mare is still a good kicker. He's probably not as good as Elam, but he's accurate and he's a veteran that could push our young guy for the job. At this stage in his career, he isn't that much different than Elam and if we could bring him in here for cheap I don't see how it wouldn't work out in our favor.

Ding ding ding....you nailed it. Elam is still pretty accurate, but his range is limited and he does not kick off, I think Mare is not that much of a drop off and alot cheaper

if thats what it takes to get a good kicker then heck burn a 5th! i dont know a whole lot about the kickers this year but it like us to target a good rookie this year.

You don't have to worry about that I don't think. We'll be picking up a young kicker somewhere along the line...

Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

This guy sucks. He's had a few good years, but not many. Going from Elam to Mare is like going from Ruth's Chris to McDonalds.

OK, Mare has a 79.7% career FG percentage. Elam's number is 80.6%. Not much of a difference.

Their splits look like this.

Yards Mare Elam
1-19 100% 100%
20-29 93% 95%
30-39 84% 92%
40-49 73% 64%
50+ 43% 61%

The big difference is in the 30-39 yard range. Elam was money from that distance. But, after looking at the numbers, I take back what I said. Mare does not suck. He is just not as good as Elam.

i wouldn't say mare sucks either, but why in the hell would you get a stop-gap kicker?

spend a late rounder on a talented young guy and don't think about it for the next 10 years minimum...

if we sign him, we better take a kicker in the draft, and only use mare as "growing pain" insurance for the new guy.

I'd say he sucks. Did you see the guy last season? Absolutely pitiful. There is a reason he is a free agent and not playing with the Saints.

oh yeah, if the last two seasons are indication, then yes.. he sucks. but i know that all kickers have down seasons and such, so i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt...

that being said, he only made 58% of his field goals in 2007. DRAFT A TALENTED ROOKIE!

You're assuming that the coverage guys figure out that they're actually allowed to tackle the returner

I like Matt Prater. He was a very good kicker at Central Florida He did very good on kick offs and shows some serious potential. His down fall, a big one too, is he only has 4 NFL attempts and he missed 3 of them when he played for Atlanta.

I think no matter who Denver keeps or signs they will draft a guy with more promise or who can atleast give Prater or the vet we sign a challenge.

as long as its not larence tynes. THe giants are soo dumb for keeping him. I had him in ff, and he missed like 7-8 30 yards or less. He even missed a few extra points (without bad snaps).

As long as we got a guy that will nail 30 -40 yards i could really care less. clutch would be nice too, but i wont be picky. THis is the year for the td's, not fg's

There is a reason that Mare was out of football and “weak legged” Elam saved two games for us last year. Since we let Elam go we will probably end up settling for some one like Mare. Since we weren’t willing to spend much money to keep Elam, Mare or who ever had better come cheap.

I'm not too worried about who we bring in.

I will miss Elam as a Bronco. The guy made one hell of a lot of field goals for us, including a 63 yd boot. He definitely inspired confidence when he trotted out to kick.

However, if we can find someone that is DECENT at placekicking, kicking off, and punting we will have upgraded and saved at least one roster spot.

Spending three roster spots on a kicker is ridiculous. We need those spots for depth at other positions.

Mare is a down grade except for Kick offs. Hopefully threy find a a sleeper in the kicking convention out in Reno.
I would hold open tryouts and invite every possible candidate out there including the drunk.. Not sure what happened to him, amazing and then poof gone.. Serious Mojo disapearance.

2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 66 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: Mare is experienced, has very good leg strength and has been durable most of his career. He handles kickoffs and placekicks. He can kick in bad weather and still boom his kickoffs into the end zone. He has good hang time and very good leg whip. He gets good lift and drives through the ball on placekicks. Mare seemed to recover in 2005 from a string of down years, but he continues to struggle with his consistency on kicks inside 40 yards. He doesn't do a lot of directional kickoffs.

id rather us get a kicker that can handle field goals AND kickoffs. i hate when it takes 3 or 4 roster spaces for specialty kickers. just get one that can handle both.

Mare is overrated as helllllll. 1st, he hasn't been a solid kicker since 2001. 2nd, he hasn't shown any signs that he's going to change that.

Mare.......don't want him. I mean it will only be for a year or two which would be a waste of money. Like several have said allready, just use a pick and get a young talented kicker that we can have for several years.

I understand getting veteran to help someone along, yet I would rather have had Elam. Since that is up in smoke, draft someone.

Can we find someone that is old enough, and has been playing long enough, that he is allowed to wear the single bar face mask still? I think that would be cool! <sarcasm off>

Elam is 80.6% NFL lifetime (but 87% 2yrs ago and 93% last yr). Does not KO as we all know.
