Aliens vs. Predator

Aliens vs. Predator (AVP) is a FPS developed by Rebellion Games and published by Sega.

Robocop vs. The Terminator. Spiderman vs. Wolverine. Freddy vs. Jason. Thing vs. Hulk. Batman vs. Superman. While all these 'dream matchups' have been explored in some way, none have been done as much as AVP has over the years, largely to mixed results.

Rebellion, the same makers of the classic PC FPS in 99, is back with a modern vision of the game for today's HD consoles.

AVP offers a wealth of campaign modes and will largely be a draw for fans of the franchises. In AVP there are three different games where you can play as either a human Marine, Alien, or Predator with their own distinctive playstyle and storyline. That said for the single player this game is perfect. There is a ton of replay value here.

As the Marine, this is a run of the mill, generic FPS. You will not find anything new, nothing Call of Duty or Halo-esque here (if this is what youre after, I recommend skipping it in favor of Bioshock 2).

Although there is a steep learning curve for the species campaigns, because they fight primarily with melee attacks they are the delight of the package.

Both the Aliens and the Predators operate with stealth. As stated earlier they fight primarily with melee attacks. This is quite difficult at first as the lock on is finicky. You'll get used to it, but expect a few cheap deaths.

The Alien is slick quick and has quirky controls when moving along walls and the ceiling. This is the most difficult mode of the game, his controls are a pain in the ass, especially when jumping surface to surface. He's designed to get in and out of the fight quickly.

A few Marines can take down a Predator, but once you gain the plasma cannon, combistick and the rest of the Predator's arsenal, with his stealth camoflage (though the Aliens can still see you) you will feel unstoppable. He is equipped to be the stealthy hunter and pick apart the enemies.

There's a lot of coolness in the kill screens of the Predator ripping apart his prey with his wrist blades for trophies. Awesome stuff.

The graphics overall are a bit of a disappointment. The jungle looks lifeless and a lot of muddy cave textures, but I think it is because it is presented very dark at times. There are cool shadow effects and lighting. Both species are accurately reproduced.

The sound is one of the best parts of the game. The eerie sounds in the darkness, the Predator's low chortles, the Alien's echoing shrill and the gunfire make it one of the great strengths. It gives it a survival horror feel.

There are a lot of intriguing multiplayer modes, with both Aliens and Predators hunting Marines in turns.

If you are a fan of either of the franchises (I am of Predator), this is a no-brainer, can't miss, must have. With lots of replay value, it's a solid purchase for casual fans too. It isn't as good as it's '99 predecessor, but it's the best AvP game to come out in years.

7/10
