the tags are based on the top 5 and 10 players at that position so if you want to franchise a guy you have to pay the average of those salaries, thats what i have heard anyway.
wow champ is up for a huge payday....i wonder if he will restructure ? i doubt we keep him at that price:mad:

lets hope that Champ wants some of that up front and will batter down somewhat for a longer term contract.

Even if he can't play CB speed wise He could move to FS and play the field for years to come.

In regards to Champ, he signed a 7 year contract in 2004, so does his contract not expire until 2011?

DENVER - Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey will be the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Bailey agreed to a seven-year, $63 million contract with the Denver Broncos that includes an $18 million signing bonus and $5 million in other bonuses.

A transition player has received a minimum offer of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.
A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation. Transition players can be signed from March 3 through July 22.

he's in the last year of his deal, which will pay him 13 million whatever this season. . . . those salaries listed are the top one-year salaries (THIS coming year) per position, which are used to calculate the numbers of the franchise and transition tags. . .

edit: remember, 2004 was the first year of that contract, so 2010 is the last year of it. . . .

also, looking at those numbers from 04 shows you the difference between a good contract and a fluff deal. . . of course i don't know just how much of that 63 millions was in incentives, but i'm guessing that it wouldn't have been more than the usual, and with all his pro bowls and All-pros i would bet he probably earned a good percentage of those. . . and incentives aside, if we do retain him for this year he'll end up having gotten almost all of that 63 million-- as opposed to a contract like the one haynesworth just got. . . that deal was touted as a hundred million, but a number of league sources have said that it's structured in such a way that he's not likely to ever see more than about half that money. . . so, he and his agent get the publicity/ego boost of the enormous numbers, but in reality he settled for a much smaller deal. . . even if we were to move champ or redo his contract, he'd end up with close to fifty million from a deal he signed back in '04, while haynesworth's '09 megadeal looks 40% bigger but may not actually have any more "real money" in it. . .

i know most people just take this shit for granted, but i give champ props for understanding that he'd been taken care of properly and not agitating for a flashy new deal when lesser-talented corners like clements were signing contracts that on paper looked better than his. . . over the years we've seen stars like urlacher and ray lewis bitch incessantly about how their deals are never big enough-- those guys are constantly agitating for bigger extensions to satisfy their greed and their egos. . . i understand that a lot of people will regard this as nothing more than doing his job, and therefore not worthy of praise or mention, but our work world isn't even close to the same ball park as these guys-- and i appreciate that champ got paid, and then shut up about it and went about his business. . . the guy has been a model pro and has more than earned his money in comparison to what a lot of teams get from their big money guys. . .

You are right - this coming year is the last year of Champ's contract. So, is basically this list a measuring stick, as far as salary - i.e. negotiation tool for players/agents to go by?

Thats exactly what it is.

those franchise #s are what any player who gets franchised this year will be paid.
So if DEN franchised Marshall, (hypothetically of course,) he automatically gets $9.521 million for one year.

champ is class act and i see him doing for the broncos what elway did his final couple years....redo his deal for another 4 years or so ,freeing up some $$$ for other guys on the team and allowing him to remain a bronco until he retires.whether it be at cb or safety. yeah !:D
or thats wishfull thinking and he knows he can get some big bucks in the uncapped year elsewhere.....boooo !

What it tells me is Denver could have 2 very good CB's in Revis/Asamugha for what they're paying champ!

He needs to make a financially sound/fair decision, methinks.
