Two Chiefs legends will be inducted this weekend into the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.

Willie Lanier and Buck Buchanan, whose play with the Chiefs earned them entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will be honored Saturday night in Atlanta. The hall will honor players, coaches and contributors from historically black college and universities.

“Buck and Willie broke barriers,” Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said in a statement. “The Chiefs were fortunate to draft both of these Hall of Fame performers, who became respected leaders on some of the greatest teams in franchise history.”

Lanier played linebacker at Morgan State before joining the Chiefs as a second-round pick in 1967. He played 11 seasons with the Chiefs and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Buchanan, a defensive tackle, played 13 seasons with the Chiefs after departing Grambling State. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990, two years before he died.

Lanier and Buchanan were teammates on the Chiefs team that won Super Bowl IV.

Buchanan will be honored alongside his college coach, Eddie Robinson, who’s also among Saturday’s 11 inductees. Deacon Jones, Willie Galimore, Bill Nunn, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Ben Stevenson, Jake Gaither and Tank Younger will complete the hall’s inaugural class.
