MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- When he last played in a Super Bowl here, Peyton Manning left the field with Most Valuable Player honors as the 2006 Indianapolis Colts celebrated victory.

This time, Manning couldn’t leave Sun Life Stadium fast enough.

Manning reacted stoically Sunday night after wide receiver Reggie Wayne dropped his team’s last gasp — a fourth-down pass in the end zone late in the fourth quarter. With hands on hips and his helmet still on, Manning returned to the sideline and stared at a video-board replay. He then headed toward the locker room before the final seconds expired in New Orleans’ 31-17 win.

Was it poor sportsmanship for not shaking hands with Saints players? Sure. But after what had just transpired in Super Bowl XLIV, I wouldn’t want to look back either.

At his postgame news conference, Manning used the word “disappointing” 18 times in an 11-minute span. He sounded like someone who felt Indianapolis lost this game more than New Orleans won it. Manning has a point. He lamented the Colts’ dropped throws, poor special teams and struggles by a defense that couldn’t stop Saints quarterback Drew Brees. When asked what New Orleans did to disrupt Indianapolis’ offensive rhythm, Manning said, “I think I’d have a hard time saying that … We stopped ourselves for the most part.”

Manning, though, has only himself to blame for the mistake that ultimately doomed the Colts. Trailing by seven points, he went to the well once too often with one of the Colts’ staple plays — a quick slant to Wayne. Manning had connected with Wayne on two of the three previous downs and tried doing it again on third-and-five from the Saints 31-yard line.

To borrow a line from Super Bowl halftime act The Who, Saints cornerback Tracy Porter wasn’t going to get fooled again. Porter jumped the route for an interception he took 74 yards for the game-sealing touchdown.

“[Wayne] said Porter squatted on the play,” said Manning, who spoke with his favorite target after getting trucked by Saints defensive end Will Smith during the return. “I give [Porter] a lot of credit. It was a different formation than the plays before. That’s been a good play for us all year long.”

It was a great year for Manning until Sunday night. He already had earned an NFL-record fourth Most Valuable Player award during the regular season. Had he beaten the Saints, Manning could have staked a legitimate claim to the greatest season ever by a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Not to be. While he had his moments in a 31-of-45, 333-yard passing performance, Manning was outplayed by Brees just like Indianapolis’ Jim Caldwell was outcoached by Sean Payton.

“We never got into a great rhythm,” Manning said. “There certainly were some lapses in our time of possession. It was strange after that.”

Manning is referring to one of the odder momentum shifts in Super Bowl history. The Colts jumped to a 10-0 lead on a 38-yard Matt Stover field goal and beautifully thrown 19-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon.

That was the last pass Manning would complete for 70 minutes in real time. The Colts ran only six second-quarter plays after being unable to convert two third downs, including a Garcon drop. The Saints consumed 12:26 of clock, then opened the second half with a successful onside kick that led to a 58-yard scoring drive and lead change.

“We had a chance to possess the ball,” Manning said of that stretch. “It’s our job to score.”

Manning didn’t apologize for not sticking around to congratulate Saints players but did offer an explanation for the hasty exit.

“I certainly know how it was three years ago when we won,” Manning said. “There’s not much consolation for the guys who didn’t win. There’s the stage being set up and the celebration. It’s time for the Saints to celebrate. It’s their field.

“I certainly congratulate all their players and the Saints organization. I’ll speak to Drew and Sean. They deserve all the credit.”

Even if he wasn’t ready to immediately give it while the confetti was flying.

That did no good to lend to his trying to build a case of not being a sore loser. He didn't give credit to the Saints who played a superb 2nd half. :yardog:

I know he shouldn't be jumping up and down for the Saints, but give credit where it's due. Shake the guys hand and admit they had a good day.

Exactly and don't wait til the next day or later after the game to call him...go up and give him the Congrats he deserved..if it had been the Colts winning,I bet Brees would have been one of the first to shake Manning's hand.

Like I said earlier, Manning probably had good intentions, but made the wrong choice, then again he may be a sore loser and loves himself more than I thought because the Saints deserve the credit! But watching ESPN this morning the excuses were nauseating that were made for the Colts and some believe it's more of the Colt's losing this game rather than the Saints winning...I disagree!

If that were any other player they would be ridiculed for doing that.

Like Brady and Bellicheck were in 07

I agree he should have seeked out Brees.
But its over now to me. Espn who I hate so much, will never let anything go:tsk:

They got beat...they couldn't stop the Saints once they got clicking.

Agreed totally. This was no fluke win; the Saints flat outplayed the Colts for the final 3 periods. Sean Peyton outcoached Caldwell. The Saints got in a dangerous early hole but remained calm - no sideline hysterics, finger pointing, or what have you. They settled down, focused on playing their game, outsmarted Indy, and proved that they 100% deserve to be the World Champions this year.

I'm with you, brother...feel exactly the same way.

This was NOT the same game as the NFC Championship game where that case could be made for the Vikings.

Bottom line, the Saints WON yesterday - not the Colts 'giving' the game away.

Also, bottom line, Manning shouldve done the quick congrats to Brees (esp.) and the other players and could've been out of there in 2 min...what a dick.

I like seeing Manning look like a douche. But I will say this. Garcon dropped a critical pass at the end of the 2nd before the Saints got a FG...Wayne dropped the 4th down TD pass...and Wayne COMPLETELY telegraphed his route on the pick 6 by Porter.

Just eliminate these three mistakes by WR's and it's a completely different ball game

If the Saints could have executed in the first half better, the score could have been higher!!

you can look at it that way...the if's but what if the Saints D had played better than they did...then the score could have still been the same..I think...

I think Peyton knows he should have congratulated Drew right then, but was too upset to do it. Emotion took over logic. In hindsight, he sees he should have just swallowed his pride and shook his hand. But he didn't, and is backpeddling.

I don't agree with them losing the game. Even if the passes were completed, the Saints would have still won. The Saints outplayed the Colts. The score would have been closer.

In all fairness, nothing Manning said was wrong.

I think the Colts clearly beat themselves. Bad coaching calls, dropped passes, muffing the onside kick recovery. Manning was the best player on the field last night for the Colts other than that pick, which is even arguable how much his fault it was.

The Colts didn't beat themselves, the Saints beat them. It was a simple case of best team won that day. On the other note, I don't agree football players have to shake hands.... Yes it is the right thing to do but it is not like hockey where they line up and shake hands..... although I think they should.

I've never lost a Super Bowl, and I sure as hell never won one so I'm not sure how I'd act!

Are you kidding, GEM? Peyton, just like Tom Brady, is the model of a class sportsman who is just as gracious in defeat as he is in victory...:D

Oh wait, I was thinking about Drew Brees there for a second...

I completely agree...if memory serves, the 4th down try was a the 3rd stright run playcall in a row...

...with Brees, I'd probably thrown at least once on 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.
