Burress: 'I will play again'Comment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

In an interview set to air Sunday on CBS, imprisoned Plaxico Burress vows to return to the NFL and said he apologized to the New York Giants for tarnishing the organization.

"I will play again," Burress said in the interview with his former Steelers coach, Bill Cowher, scheduled to air on CBS' "NFL Today."

The interview was conducted from the upstate New York prison where the receiver is currently incarcerated after pleading guilty to attempted weapons possession in the second degree.

He looked me in the eye. I believe he was sincere. I think I know him well enough to know that.

-- Bill Cowher, on his interview with Plaxico Burress

Burress said he works out about four times a week in the prison to keep in shape for a possible comeback.

"It's not LA Fitness or Bally's, but I do push-ups, sit-ups," Burress said in the interview. "I make do."

Burress was sentenced to two years in prison. He is expected to serve about 20 months with credit for good behavior -- meaning he could be released as early as spring 2011 -- followed by two years of probation.

Burress said he wrote a letter to Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch apologizing for his actions.

"I told them how sorry I was about bringing all this bad publicity to such a stand-up organization," Burress said in the interview with Cowher.

Burress, then with the Giants, was at the Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan in November 2008 with a .40-caliber gun tucked into the waistband of his track pants. He later said he was concerned for his safety because a teammate had been held up at gunpoint days before. The weapon slipped down Burress' leg and fired, injuring his right thigh.

Burress

The gun wasn't licensed in New York or New Jersey, where Burress lived, and his Florida concealed-weapons permit had expired. He also failed to report the incident to authorities.

Prosecutors argued the bullet narrowly missed a security guard, warranting a stiffer punishment. In early August 2009, Burress was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. He faced a minimum sentence of 3½ years if convicted at trial.

On Aug. 20, Burress pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Cowher, who was Burress' coach for five years in Pittsburgh, told the New York Post that he believed the receiver was sincere in the interview.

"He looked me in the eye. I believe he was sincere," Cowher told the newspaper. "I think I know him well enough to know that ...

"He admittedly blames no one except himself. He's had a lot of time to reflect. He's had great, unwavering support from his wife. ... It's been an eye-awakening situation for him. He had a daughter born when he was in prison. It's very sobering to be in there. When you walk through the door, and you listen to him talk, you can see it's very genuine."

Burress' work-release application was denied by the New York Department of Correctional Services last month because of the nature of his crime.

Burress became a Super Bowl hero when he caught the winning touchdown pass in the last minute of the Giants' 17-14 upset win over the previously unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The Giants released him in April 2009.

you would think with all that $$$$ he could have found a loophole and worked a deal with the da for "failure to renew a concealed weapons permit " or something ,maybe build a youth center and do some community service etc...
i mean he lost alot of $$$ and almost shot his own balls off !
and meanwhile o.j. is looking for the real killer on the back nine in florida somewhere .....just dont get it:confused:

Uhhh....O.J. is in prison.

Buress only hurt himself, but he could have KILLED someone else.

I don't hate the guy, I don't think he's a terrible human being, but I don't exactly feel bad for him either. When he gets out most people will be pretty open to him playing in the NFL again because he's one of the few sports players who actually got caught doing something illegal and paid the price.

Yes OJ is FINALLY in prison...as far as Plaxico it does seem like a bad deal..seems a hefty fine and probation would have made more sense if that makes sense.

Who is the guy that killed the guy with his car last year? I can't recall his name.
He I believe got probation.

Who knows? Different states I suppose is what determines punishment.

Burress' sentence was fine...I have no issues. He can pay his debt, get out, and prove he's learned is lesson.

Like O.J., the fact this POS walked still miff's me...

BINGO.... that and a Mayor doing EVERYTHING he could to make an example of Plaxico because of his name. If this was Joe Blow, the prosecutor wouldn't have gone after him as he did.

2 years for shooting yourself is complete BS. I guess the next kid that runs with scissors should get at least 8 months. The next boy that plays with matches, 10 months.

Don't forget about those dangerous jay-walkers.... and the complete menaces to society that speed on wet streets!

I think two years is definitely a bit much. Certainly he broke the law having a weapon that wasn't registered (felony) and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Whether accident or not discharging a firearm within city limits is also a crime. In many states merely having a weapon inside an establishment that serves alcohol is also a crime.

So, granted, there were or could have been plenty of charges. However, I think two years was a bit much for Plaxico's crime.

I know that you have/had an issue with Vick being in the NFL, would/will you have one if Burress is in the NFL again?

Not all of us East Coasters are villains.

Gun laws here some of the strictest in the Nation.

I'm glad he got the time he did. These guys who are big time and **** up like this are an example for the rest of them.

Here is the problem with gun control laws,

Only the people you DON'T need to worry about follow them.

He got 2 years because the mayor is a Jets fan. He renamed Manhattan to Revis Island. If Burress played for the Jets, it wouldn't have been pushed.

The problem is minimum sentencing guidelines.

He plead to a lessor charge so minimum sentencing isn't relevant.

They also went full bore to stop him from getting work release.

Also, something like 90% of people facing the same original charge in NYC recieved much more lenient punishment.

90% of the people in NYC aren't stupid enough to leave the evidence in their own home for a month until the police find it...Burress did. Plus he's married to an attorney and didn't even tell her the gun was in the house.

If being an idiot is a crime, Plaxico fits the bill.

It makes one wonder if he's capable of learning a new system:confused:. The game changes(particularly systems)quickly, 3 years out of the NFL is a long time.
