FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- After finishing up the second day of Pro Bowl practice, Elvis Dumervil headed back to his hotel room for a little rest and relaxation.

His phone rang. It was Head Coach Josh McDaniels, and he let the outside linebacker/defensive end know that his position coach from last season, Don Martindale, had been named the team's new defensive coordinator. In other words, as Dumervil said, "it was good news."

After spending the 2009 season learning a new position under "Wink" Martindale, Dumervil came away with a respect for the coach's intelligence and work ethic. He also knows how to get the best out of his players -- after all, Dumervil became the first league sack champion in Broncos history with 17 sacks on the way to a Pro Bowl under Martindale's tutelage.

"I think we're going to be sound," Dumervil said. "I think he's a smart coach and I think he's going to create a lot of problems for opponents. I think he knows how to mix it up well. With his background of working with different guys that have been successful in this league, I'm excited. I think it's going to be a great deal for us, and I'm looking forward to working with him."

That track record Dumervil spoke of is built around a five-year stint in Oakland, when Martindale coached the team's linebackers.

During that time, he helped Oakland rank sixth in the league against the pass, and his coaching was instrumental in the development of linebacker Kirk Morrison, who registered the most tackles in the AFC -- second in the NFL -- with 491 stops in four seasons under Martindale.

Thomas Howard, another Oakland linebacker, thrived under Martindale's tutelage as well. He and Morrison each registered seven interceptions from 2006-08, making them two of the league's top five interceptors among linebackers during that span.

When Martindale focused mainly on the club's inside linebackers for his first two seasons with the Raiders, a third linebacker put up big numbers. Danny Clark registered the ninth-most tackles in the NFL from 2004-05.

Last season, Martindale's group was led by the performance of Dumervil as well as D.J. Williams, who was named a Pro Bowl alternate after leading the team with 122 tackles. Dumervil, Williams and Mario Haggan all tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles, and Martindale's unit helped Denver rank seventh in the NFL in total yards per game allowed and third in the league in passing yards per game allowed.

Robert Ayers said the success of players under Martindale starts with the attitude the coach takes toward them.

"I'm going to coach you to be great and not good," Ayers said of Martindale's first words to him. "He took that role with me and everybody else in the linebackers group. He expects you to be great and he doesn't settle for anything less."

And that is part of why McDaniels said he was excited to name Martindale the team's defensive coordinator.

"Most importantly, we want to continue to improve," the head coach said. "Wink holds his players to a very high standard, both on the field and in the meeting room, and he makes them better. He is highly regarded within our organization, and we look forward to him leading our defense."

The excitement surrounding Martindale's promotion isn't limited to the linebacker corps, however. In fact, Brian Dawkins said giving Martindale the position was "something that I was rooting for."

The Pro Bowler said Martindale helped him transition to a new scheme, and constantly gave him video on opposing teams and tips to make him better. Now that the coach will have an expanded role, Dawkins is anxious to see what the defense can achieve.

"Wink has his own ideas on what he's going to add to what we did last year," he said. "He's a very aggresive-minded play-caller, from the things that we talked about off the field and even some of the things we talk about on the sideline, some of the things he would have liked to have done. I'm looking for the same aggressive-style defense and for us to make some big plays."

McDaniels touched on that fact as well, saying that "defensively, we will keep our system consistent in terms of the scheme and will play an aggressive, physical brand of football."

As Dawkins said, the players are "already used to him talking in front of the defense, and we trust him."

That trust in his new defensive coordinator is what has brought a sense of anticipation for Dumervil, as he is ready to start working toward next season.

"Now we can move forward and get better," he said.

I'm glad we went Martindale over Pees. At least that gives us a chance to establish some continuity in terms of the system and philosophies. Now lets hope Martindale can fix our atrocious run defense that finished 26th in the freakin league.

I suspect doom is being very posistive while dreaming of sugarplums dancing in his head.

We are not going pay him top five money for a OLB that can't hold his water playing the run.

Dume can be a very dangerous weapon. He is one of the best pass rushers in the game but thats all he is imo. That alone holds a lot of value to a defense though. I would like to keep him but not for top 5 or even top 10 money

He'll get slightly more than James Harrison, which considering Doom's age, would be a steal.

Doom will improve vs. the run. This was his first year as a LB. He's well worth top 5 money, as he's young, just coming into his prime, and constantly improving. When the Dline in front of him is improved, he'll be even better. McD calling him at the pro bowl to tell him about Wink tells me that he fully intends to re-sign him.

I agree - and I thought it was a very nice gesture for Coach McD to call Doom, rather than Doom finding out thru the press.

yea, what a money-grubber. . . you really figured him out!

guy has kicked much ass for us and never ONCE has he said a single word about money, even now when everyone knows he's about to hit restricted free agency. . . when many if not most guys would have been on the offensive months ago, in a very public fashion. . .

but yea, sure, i'm sure he is looking forward to getting paid. . . is that a bad thing? last i heard we live in a capitalist society, and he's busted his ass for years for far less than other guys of his ability and production. . . so coming off an all-pro season where he led the league in sacks, why shouldn't he want to get paid?

i will add that we're fools if we don't do it. . . you want talent, you pay for talent-- none of the other stars in the league are playing for the vet minimum. . . either we can shell out what he's worth, or we can give him away for draft picks and go into next year with no real pass rusher on the roster. . . hey, maybe that high draft pick jarvis moss will pick up the slack!

Doom has played DE for his whole career which you need to be a better run stopper then at OLB. I think he's just a pass rush specialist. A very good one at that but one dimensional.

Could also be said about Marshall...

I'd say that he is intending to TRY and re-sign him. But it will not be for huge money.

NE's MO on this point was to rarely if EVER break the bank on their progeny, as most of the time they had a spare on the shelf to plug in. Now i know they do not have a replacement for the sacks but they do have ayers that was drafted as a OLB and now he has a year under his belt.

SO if Doom gives them a hometown discount he stays if not we get a 1st and a 3rd out of him or match his offer sheet. I think we will take the draft choices and laugh all the way to the draft day.

I would also guess that we will trade back the 1st for a couple of other draft choices.

Hell folks we only had 31 new faces last year good chance we could match or exceed that this year.:salute:

Never said he did not bust his ass but remember the BRONCOS gave him a chance to play and believed in him when NO ONE else did.

I also did not ask him to take VET min. I just said they are not going to give him top five money that he is supposedly wanting. As I said in the above post if he gives them a home town discount they will look at it if not they get a 1st and a 3rd and wish him the best.

This kid made less money than Jarvis Moss did last year and we as fans never heard him complain once. He talks about we're and us and I'm looking forward, he has earned the right to a good pay day. I keep reading on the board where he's asking for top money but I have not seen a quote from him anywhere, so I'm not going to assume anything.

I am really happy to read that Coach called him and let him know who the new D Coach is. This was a great article Carol, thank you so much for posting it, it really made me smile.

What? Impossible. The article's lying. McD just wants to destroy this team. He'd never make such a gesture to a Shanahan player.

We don't need talent. We just need the McDaniel's talking points. Talent NEVER has anything to do with winning games Dog. ;)

drafting him 4th round is hardly the same as no one else believed in him.. but nice spin..
is saying supposedly your way of an out in case he wants no such thing? wait.. i'm sure you heard it somewhere.. lol..

He has no reason to nor should he give a home town discount. Let's hope the home team isn't so full of itself to think youngster sack leaders and back to back to back 100 yd. recievers are a dime a dozen and can be replaced.. He will deserve his money and make the Broncos or whatever team he ends up on better.

sounds like doom and coach have a good relationship, and both seem to indicate they plan on being on the same team next year.
GOOD NEWS for us bronco fans.....now we just have to hope our gm and doom's agent can see eye to eye as well !

Yep.

Getting bigger defensive linemen who can tie up blockers sure wouldn't hurt.
