Broncos released WR Javon Walker, according to ESPN's Michael Smith.

He's a big name, but Walker's contract and knee injury made it an easy choice by Denver. That no one choose to give up a late-round pick for Walker is telling. It's rumored that he could need microfracture surgery in the future, although he will have plenty of suitors lined up with MRI machines. Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay have been rumored to be interested.

I wish we could have gotten another late-day draftpick for him. Just releasing him wasn't a great option, but neither was keeping him around, and his bonus status made it a pretty simple choice.

I still would have worked the phones up until his bonus was due, though.

Best of luck, Javon - hopefully you learned something this time around and your knee is healthy enough to continue your career.

If your knee is done and your brain remains in the "off" position, then allow me to say, "You are one lucky millionaire punk, sir."

No - I think that is Walker's real value - i.e. Worthless to us or anyone else. Nate Jackson, is a step up, and thats not necessarily good.

Shaw - don't take it as grim - we are avoiding wasting money on marginal ballplayers and headcases. Thats a good thing. If we have a crappy draft its time to panic. Until then, I'm perfectly happy to sign nobody at all.

Edit: I have no problem bringing in guys looking for a home in a few months, and willing to work cheap. I just don't want us getting into this feeding frenzy like we have in the past few years.

we need more help at DT than the draft can provide IMO. we just lost a huge chunk of cap space for nothing. good players like corey williams and madieu williams are going to other teams--they are not marginal and are not headcases, and would do a great deal to help our football team.

(again, i'm a pessimist in the offseason {but an optimist mid-season, didn't realize that til now}. i'm not one of those 'get this guy or we fail' guys most of the time, but i do want to see the broncos at least try to address their major needs).

Well at least that is over with. Now we need to focus on a solid replacement. Deep down I wanted Denver and Javon to come to some sort of agreement, but that is kind of hard when the WR doesn't want to be here. I re-watched the interview at the end of the season and his tone is like he really wants out.

Lelie made a stupid mistake and look how things ended up for him. I mean if he stayed and things worked out look where he would be. I have a feeling Walker will realize he should have worked something out. The one thing that bugs me is that we didn't get anything in return.

Is Javon Walker headed to Dallas?

February 29, 2008 5:55 PM

We've been telling you about the Cowboys' interest in Broncos receiver Javon Walker for a couple of weeks. Now that he's been released by the Broncos, Dallas is free to pursue the enigmatic receiver.

As Todd Archer points out on my old blog, Walker's former position coach in Green Bay, Ray Sherman, serves in that same capacity for the Cowboys. Sherman has a close relationship with Walker, and he was one of the people who consoled him when Broncos cornerback and Fort Worth native Darrent Williams died in his arms following a shooting in downtown Denver on Jan. 1, 2007.

Walker has had two strong seasons (2004 and 2006), but he missed almost the entire 2005 season and a large portion of 2007 with a knee injury. I've talked to a couple of people who said he's never been able to recover from Williams' death. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is someone who believes that a change of scenery can have a tremendous impact on a player, as evidenced by Terrell Owens and Leonard Davis.

Don't underestimate Sherman's influence in Jones' decision-making. He gives him a lot of credit for T.O.'s success this past season.

I did get Javon to sign my jersey after a Broncos game this year though so its not a complete waste I guess. :elefant: I'm not going to wear it anyways  And fan Fare is always fun though I always try to get rookies when I go. I never wait in line for hours to get someones autograph.

But players I get jerseys of always leave.

I have a Ben Gordan Jersey for the Bulls and his name is always in and out of trade rumors.

Though I do have some jerseys of players that didn't get traded but it seems like right when I get the jersey they leave within a year. Its kind of sad. Especially with the Javon one since I took my mom to her 1st game this year and she told me I could pick out a jersey and she would wear it at the game and then it would be mine. I picked out a Javon one and then its been bad ever since. So I'm sad about that.

But life goes on. I think my next jersey I want is a Marshall one but do I really want him to leave Denver? :(

Well, I hope the Broncos pay closer attention to attitudes from now on. I'm
becoming very, very tired of their wasting CAP money and draft choices on
overgrown children who cannot bring themselves to produce as they promised.

Just think what kind of offensive attack the Broncos could have had with
a positive-minded Javon in the mix. He will probably go on, as did Moss and
T.O., to buoy the offense of whatever team he joins. And, just as they, he
will give no further thought to the ruins he created and left behind.

Good riddance, punk.

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/feb/29/broncos-release-walker/

It didn't have to end this way.

Javon Walker wanted to make that point clear Friday after learning he was released by the Broncos. It was a move that had been anticipated nearly since the moment the wide receiver publicly ranted at season's end about his role with the team's offense.

"I'm not leaving because I didn't want to make it work," he said. "I'm not pushing my way out. There was stuff done that led to make me say, 'Why should I stay?' "

He said the issues mostly began when he hurt his right knee early last season. He claimed he got the sense the team was being murky about the condition of his knee, which was later repaired surgically in Houston.

That situation came on the heels of a consistent personal belief that his skills weren't fully being utilized - thoughts he occasionally made public, even while leading the team in catches (69) and yards (1,084) in 2006 and into his quiet comeback last season.

But the real change in his feelings, he stressed, came while he was rehabilitating during the season and was approached by the media and was asked about the possibility this offseason of taking a pay cut.

Add in a nominal role once he returned while Brandon Marshall took over No. 1 receiver duties, and those negative emotions only heightened, leading to "frustration" that became his postseason diatribe.

However, the 10-minute media session in early January was somewhat calculated, too, he admitted.

"I knew something would happen or come out of it."

The Broncos eventually went to Walker and asked whether he would be willing to tweak his contract, which included $5.4 million in bonuses.

He refused.

When there were no takers on the open market, at least via trade, it sent Walker into free agency for the first time. He'll join weak-side linebacker Ian Gold, who also was cut by the Broncos on Friday.

"With me coming back here, I'm supposed to take a pay cut? Why would I want to do that?" Walker asked, explaining all that changed in his situation was that he got hurt.

Walker on Friday consistently insisted Marshall's ascension as a 100-catch receiver wasn't the root cause of his unhappiness, but rather part of a yearlong span in which he signed with Denver, got hurt, then was ask to cede money.

"If people say I won't play second fiddle, just be on the lookout for who I might be lined up across on the other side next season," Walker said. "And if you look at that, then why couldn't it have been like that in Denver?"

Still, it was clear the fundamental aspects of the Broncos offense, with a young quarterback in Jay Cutler attempting to come into his own and the team leaning more on the running game, never were going to satisfy Walker, especially with Marshall's development.

"There would have been enough balls," Walker said, despite those feelings. "We could have both had 70-80, however it would have went, 80-90. But like I said, there was a lot of frustration that built where after they were like, 'Take a pay cut,' it was whoa, whoa, whoa . . . ' "

Among the teams that could grab Walker are Philadelphia, where quarterback Donovan McNabb has been a steady training partner, and Dallas, where his former position coach in Green Bay, Ray Sherman, is employed in a similar role.

"I'm looking for a team that wants to win and use their receiver talent to win and get them where they need to be," Walker said.

Walker noted he has been training for about the last month and that his knee, which also was repaired after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2005 with the Packers before he was dealt to Denver, feels good.

"A team flies me out for a physical, I pass. It's a done deal," he said.

That rosy outlook on his health goes against Broncos coach Mike Shanahan's assessment at his season-ending press conference. It was mentioned there that Walker at some point will need microfracture surgery to allow him to heal completely.

It's a statement Walker and his agent have been trying to downplay since.

"He's not a doctor, so he doesn't know what I'm going to need," Walker said of Shanahan's comments. "And I've talked to doctors and seen doctors and believe you me, I'm not going to need that. It's just him saying that. If he's a head coach and a doctor? Shoot, I give him props that he can do it all."

Walker and Shanahan never met after the season to try to hash out any differences.

"If they wanted to meet, they would have met with me," Walker said.

In two seasons with the Broncos, Walker started 21 of 24 games, with 95 receptions, 1,371 yards and eight touchdown catches. He rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown.

The cost to the Broncos was a 2006 second-round pick and nearly $7 million in dead money on the salary cap.

"I'm going to go to a team and have a hell of a season next year," Walker said. "In football, you get injuries. It's the nature of the game. It's not going to be a problem or anything that slows me down. I just look forward to the next step in the process."
