(sung with an off-key twang, in any tune you wish)

One day my dog came home with no bone
He was so sad and felt all alone.
So he dug a big hole
And put in a pole
And buried my truck and momma and phone

Is that just a stereotype? That's the impression i've had my entire life?

Psychos like metal, morons like whatever pop/rap/soft rock mtv has on and rednecks like country.

Ok, I found a list like the one I had 20 years ago. Here are some of the titles on it:

I flushed you from the toilets of my heart

Get Your Biscuits In The Oven, And Your Buns In The Bed.

I Don't Care if it Rains or Freezes 'Long as I Have My Plastic Jesus Sittin' on the Dashboard of my Car

I Gave Her the Ring, and She Gave Me the Finger

I Got the Hungries for Your Love, and I'm Waitin In Your Welfare Line

I Was Looking Back to See If You Were Looking Back to See If I Was Looking Back to See if You Were Looking Back at Me

They Can Lock Me Up for Lovin' You, but They Can't Keep My Face from Breakin' Out

You're The Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly

Side note: In 1973, the Dolphins hosted the Steelers in MNF and, before the kickoff, Frank Gifford gets on the P.A. at the Orange Bowl while the cameras focused on a pretty blonde at midfield. Gifford says "And now turn your attention to the middle of the field where our national anthem will be sung by international recording star..(and the camera zooms in on country singer Lynn Anderson with a big smile until Gifford finishes his sentence)...Loretta Lynn!

And you can see this mortified look come over Anderson's face until she gets back in character and smiles and waves and then sings the song.

That's why Cosell used to needle Gifford as "Faultless Frank" because Gifford routinely made gaffes on the air. It annoyed Cosell to no end that he could say practically anything and be flooded with hate mail while Giff could make the most idiotic gaffes and get nothing but fawning press.

I wonder what choice words Lynn Anderson said once she got back in her dressing room.

Is there a better country song than Seminole Wind by John Anderson? I think not.

KGoBQIhyFFM

Love that song. Thanks.

Here are the lyrics to follow:

Ever since the days of old,
Men would search for wealth untold.
They'd dig for silver and for gold,
And leave the empty holes.
And way down south in the Everglades,
Where the black water rolls and the saw grass waves.
The eagles fly and the otters play,
In the land of the Seminole.

So blow, blow Seminole wind,
Blow like you're never gonna blow again.
I'm calling to you like a long lost friend,
But I know who you are.
And blow, blow from the Okeechobee,
All the way up to Micanopy.
Blow across the home of the Seminole,
The alligators and the garr.

Progress came and took its toll,
And in the name of flood control,
They made their plans and they drained the land,
Now the glades are going dry.
And the last time I walked in the swamp,
I sat upon a Cypress stump,
I listened close and I heard the ghost,
Of Osceola cry.

So blow, blow Seminole wind,
Blow like you're never gonna blow again.
I'm calling to you like a long lost friend
But I know who you are.
And blow, blow from the Okeechobee,
All the way up to Micanopy.
Blow across the home of the Seminole,
The alligators and the garr.

BTW, I was raised on Eddy Arnold, too - my mother's heart throb. :D

Did your mother buy those green, translucent 45 RPMs? Remember those?

Remember this?

Vaguely remember the translucent 45s. Mom liked the 1960s Eddy crooner period more than the earlier period. I bought an import CD of his songs from the 1940s and it was so different from the smooth artist of the 1960s.

Here's an interesting tidbit. Arnold was a country success in the late 1940s and early 1950s and was managed by Col. Tom Parker. Parker wanted to make him a national star but the deals Parker wanted to make would do more to make Parker rich than Arnold. So, Arnold decided he could manage himself and fired Parker who then moved on to a guy named Elvis Presley who let himself be marketed the same way Parker wanted to do with Arnold.

But Arnold didn't do too badly either. He bought a lot of farmland around Nashville and gradually sold it off to developers as Nashville grew the last 40 years.

Well it toped the country charts in America, Canada, and Australia in 1992 so clearly somebody liked it. It also peaked at number 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, which is very high for a country song.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

The early 90's was a sad time for that sort of... music. People who chose songs to like were clearly not capable of making sound decisions.

Horse with no name - Jim Croce
Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
The Highwayman - The Highwaymen (Johhny Cash, Willy Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings)
Seven Spanish Angels - Willy Nelson and Ray Charles

Johnny Cash and his ilk were more folk than country. The country that sucks is the twangy stuff where they talk about the wife leaving or the husband leaving, whether they got kicked out or divorced... or died. Oh, and they like to sing about people dying. Apparently, they think really sad songs are the best one, and the saps that buy it think so too.

I should have added what made this song so special.

As I remember (I hope I get it right - it's been many years now), Johnny went
out into Death Valley alone so he could get the right feeling for the album
from which this song came. Later (I don't know exactly how long now - days,
weeks), friends went out to fetch him and found him almost dead. This is
what inspired this song by Johnny Cash . . .

Thank you. I'm a sap.

Well, it's like this . . . I have run across a lot of music I dislike in these threads,
but I have yet to comment on even one of them. I don't see the point. I talk
about the ones I like . . .

P.S. My tastes in music range in country, rock, classical, blues, bluegrass,
Mideastern, Native American, folk, western . . . now if you don't like my taste
in music, is there something else out there you can get into?

There are many threads created that serve no purpose other than taking up bandwidth. Yet, to keep conversation going, we respond to them.

This is not one of those threads. Neither this thread nor any other of the music
appreciation threads fall into that category. Sorry, but these threads don't need
bashing in them to keep them going. All that does is to spoil it for those who
appreciate a certain genre, whether this one or the rock ones, or any other.
Much as I despise rap (but then, we were talking about music), I would just
stay out of that thread, rather than go in and derail it with my expressions of
distaste.

As I implied, I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. So, if you're not talking
about rap (which, as I also implied, is not music, IMO), there is a good chance
I could appreciate it. If not, I won't have much to say about it . . .

My daughter was 17 when her mother and I decided to take her with us out to
a Country club. My daughter looked so divine, blonde hair, white satin dress,
and a flower in her hair.

She told me she had a special song for me, and she asked me to dance. Then
she danced and sang this song to me, substituting "Daddy" for "darling." To this
day, it is difficult for me to listen to it without a tear forming in the corner of
an eye . . .
