View Full Version : Combine affirms RB as a position of high value

OK, if you watched most of the coverage yesterday you might remember Mayock saying that there werent many WRs running under 4.5 compared to most years. RB on the other hand, was a completely different story. But the big three did everything that was expected of them this weekend. I dont see how you can not be impressed with ALL of them (McFadden, Mendehnall, Stewart). Everyone of them put on a show and in doing so only affirmed what was established in some of our recent discussions about RB being a position of value at the 12 spot. I realize we just signed Henry and you can look at it as a sign he will be in the fold this year, or you can look at it like he will also be easy to cut if he fails to impress. But even in signing Henry, that doesnt change the fact that RB is a position of high value, especially at the 12 spot. Tackle is also one, but it depends on how committed Shanahan is to giving Harris a shot at LT. But in any case, I know its not the need that some people feel tethered to, but when you have a chance at the size/speed combo that McFadden, Mendehnall, and Stewart provide, its hard to go wrong in taking them...they might likely be the safest pick...even safer than trading down.

At the end of the telecast yesterday, Faulk was saying he doesnt remember a time when he saw the running backs run that well. While thats true...and you also had Charles and Johnson, there were only a few that have that size/speed combo like I mentioned before.

If we trade for one of the DT we are rumored to be interested in......

Get Stewart or Mendenhall at 12
take best available tackle in the 2nd, which isn't a huge drop off from anyone you would take in the 1st anyways.

Already a better team with just this!

Exactly... sometimes you have to weigh your team needs versus value.

To me, Stewart provides very good value at #12. Is it a position of GREAT need for 2008? Probably not, but what if Stewart can be that "franchise" back (ala TD) for the next 5-8 years.

Stewart has to become an option if we fortify other needs with trades or free agency. OT, S, LB, DT, etc.

I just drool over the fact that we could have these skill players together for the better half of the next decade. Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, and Stewart.

Provided we filled a few other needs, I wouldn't be upset with Mendenhall...unless Stewart is still on the board. So, would I take Mendehall OVER Stewart? No way.

I'm the other way around. I think Mendenhall goes before Stewart.

If we can come away with stew/mend and still have our 2nd and also get a dt as to what boss said i would be thrilled!!!

I love henry but as said above an offense of cutler, stew/mend marshall, scheff, wr (whoever) for the next 5 years minimum is insanely dominant!!! And then of course we got dan grahm and stokley.

Maybe they'll just be drafted at the same time? *rolls eyes*

You know, on draft day I'd love to see Stewart and Mendenhall take this "so-and-so will be drafted first" thing upon themselves to settle.

"And now, with the 6th pick...wait, did Stewart just trip Mendenhall?"

"I think he did - now Mendenhall is on his feet and just bitchslapped Stewart! Now there's hair pulling, and eye gouging...boy, neither guy wants to give an inch. Both obviously think they deserve to be picked here, Mel..."

The guys are within a few picks of each other talent-wise. Whichever you prefer is just that, a preference - their stats and their skills don't make either an obvious winner. I prefer Stewart, but if I "only" got Mendenhall I could probably "force" myself to live with that.

It's not like either is a horrible RB.

Think of it in terms of taking Mendenhall or Stewart over Conner or Balmer. I already know we have a preference. Id complain too if they took Stewart over Mendenhall but Id rather have Stewart over Conner, Rivers, Balmer, etc.

That is how it is going to be. If we end up with a Rb in the first then I prefer Stewart to Mendenhall for various reasons, but considering what we do before the draft I would be ecstatic with either. If certain things get taken care of then it will only potentially be win-win for us in April.

Also, if we add a DT like Rogers and a LB like Vilma, exactly how many other defensive positions did you want to address with a 1st round pick?

Running back Chris Johnson will draw a lot of interest from NFL Scouts because of his versatility. He is kind of a hybrid player, half running back, half receiver. Johnson has nice size (5’ 11” 195 lbs) and blazing speed. He was clocked at 4.39 in the 40 yard dash in the spring (FASTER NOW). The NFL loves speedy running backs with great hands and that is exactly what Johnson is. He can also contribute as a kick returner on special teams.

This year (2007) Johnson finished ranked #1 in the NCAA in all purpose yards with an average of 212 yards per game. He recorded 1200 rushing yards, 496 receiving and 856 returning kicks. He has the speed to score from anywhere on the field as evidenced by his 16 rushing touchdowns. His combined 22 TDs ranked him 3rd in the nation in points scored. Watch some game film on this kid, defensive players just can't get an angle on him, he is just too fast.

He is comfortable lining up in the backfield, splitting out wide as a receiver or returning kicks and punts. I look for Johnson to get an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine where he should set the track on fire with his speed and athleticism. His only weakness right now is his ability to hold onto the football, he has fumbled on occasion and he will need to improve in that area in the NFL.

During the 2007/2008 Hawaii Bowl, Johnson just exploded, he set a Division 1 NCAA bowl record with 408 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 223 yards and 1 TD, caught three passes for 32 yards and returned six kickoffs for 153 yards. If you think his draft stock is on the rise after that performance......wait until he runs at the combine. See the video highlights here: LINK

Last year (2006) as a junior, despite suffering a neck injury in the spring, he led his team in rushing for the 3rd consecutive year with 972 all-purpose yards: 314 rushing, 176 receiving and 482 on kickoff returns. He was selected to the First Team All-Conference USA team as a kick returner, where he ranked fourth among all Conference USA kick returners averaging 23 yards per kick return.

In 2005 as a sophomore, he started all 11 games at running back and led his team in rushing with 684 yards on 176 carries and six rushing touchdowns. He also caught 35 passes for 356 yards.

As a true freshman in 2004 he played in all 11 games and was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman squad as a running back and kickoff return specialist. He was also selected as East Carolina’s "Outstanding Newcomer-of-the-Year” and he led the Pirates in rushing yards (561), kickoff return yards (765) and all-purpose yards (1,562). He set a total of eight ECU freshman single game or single-season records.

Coming out of high school Johnson was rated among the top 100 players in state of Florida by Super-Prep Magazine. Chris Johnson is also a weight room warrior, he recorded prep power numbers of 265 (clean-lift) and 315 (bench-press) and was timed at 10.62 in the 100-meter sprint. He ran the anchor leg on fastest 4x100 relay team in the nation and won the Golden South and Golden West national titles in track.

Theres no way Johnson is a 10.62 100 meter guy. Jordy Nelson ran a 10.65 in HS. Reggie Bush ran a 10.4. Im guessing, he's at least a 10.3 guy now. BTW, does anyone actually see him being the bellcow? Hed be a great returner/change of pace back but we have that in Hall (though he's not that fast).

The thing about Johnson is I liked what I saw from him way before I saw the speed numbers. He was dominant in his bowl game (ran like 225 vs Boise State)...much like a certain Brandon Marshall was when he came out. I really like this kid.

His stats are interesting...he rushed for 18 yards vs UNC...but caught for 136. VTech held him to 29 yards in the opener and he had a few sub 100 yard games, but then he just exploded. Total yards: 29(VT), 154(UNC), 74(So Miss), 89(WVU), 171(Hous), 178(UCF), 126(UTEP), 85(NCSt), 120(UAB), 313(Mem), 117(Marsh), 240(Tul), 255(Boise)

I don't like Chris Johnson as a pure back.

As a Dave Meggett all-around weapon, I think he's really great. He can catch, run, return, do whatever you want and he's a pure home run threat.

But Johnson falls down when you hit him, and he drops the ball when you hit him. I can't see him being a 25 carry guy. He's a weapon, just as Reggie Bush should be, not a primary ball carrier.

If some team uses him like Meggett he's gonna be a great pick.

If they try to use him as their main back, or don't have the QB and return team to let him really shine, then he's gonna disappoint.

Chris Johnson had the better team, but against similar opposition they averaged the same YPC (5.9 vs. 6.0) - Matt just ran it more. Matt caught almost the same # of balls, but his average was much less than Johnson's.

And Matt was THE weapon on Tulane, and wasn't exactly re-positioned on the field to take best advantage of his skills.

Like I said, I like the utter versatility of CJ's skillset. But for us, Chris Johnson isn't what we need. Fast backs who can catch the ball and help in the return game? We have a couple.

But with the right OC Chris Johnson is gonna have a few highlights on Sports Center...

Sorry, but Chris Johnson ran a 4.24 in the 40 at the Bine.

Thats faster than mister Bush by a bit. And if you saw it, youre probably still shaking your head up to now. :D

As for me, if we dont take Mendenhall or Stewart in the first, and we end up looking for a back later, I hope its Smith. No one seems to be looking at this guy very seriously. Hes Brandons homeboy coming out of Central Florida. Regardless of opponents, 2600 + yards in a season is unreal no matter who youre playing.

Thats what I was saying. It said in HS Johnson ran a 10.62 and I know off the top of my head that 10.62 is Jordy Nelson territory...and also that Reggie Bush ran a 10.4...and since Johnson is decisively faster than Bush, he is probably a 10.3 and possibly faster.

Yeah, its true Charles did run in the 10.1s but that doesnt necessarily imply that he's faster than Charles. Some guys are stronger over 100 meters and 200 meters than they are 40 yards. I wouldnt just assume Johnson is faster than Charles over 100 meters because he's .1 faster on his 40 time...but I definitely think Johnson is faster than Bush though.
