View Full Version : Jay Cutler will throw to Bennett at Pro Day

Vanderbilt WR Earl Bennett measured 5'11/209 at the Combine weigh-in.

This is shorter than expected, but still fine for a slot receiver, which is what Bennett indicated that he wants to be. Bennett will run his 40 Saturday and would help himself immensely with a time in the 4.4s. He'll also have Jay Cutler throwing to him at his Pro Day, which is quite the advantage.

Vanderbilt wide receiver Earl Bennett has been at Chip Smith's joint in Atlanta working out with Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler since Jan 10. Word is, Cutler is telling Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shannahan to draft Bennett, which isn't surprising.

Bennett is going to put on a clinic come his Pro Day ...

I wonder if this is Jays subtle way of lobbying for his guy. Id rather take a DT at where Bennett is slotted to go.

Im sure Denver will get a copy of his work out tape, unless they send someone in person. Im also Intrigued by Vanderbilt's LT Chris Williams. I could see us trading back for this guy if the price was right.

I wouldnt bet on him being there if we traded back. Chicago is also looking at OL.

Some of the mocks I've seen have Williams going before Clady.

I didnt know he was that coveted. I figured he would be there around the 20 spot at least.

Chris Williams should definitely be gone somewhere before 20. He'd be a sweet LT for us.

The more i think about it, the more I'd almost like to trade back and get more picks.

Crap, I just looked back at the draft order, and can see that all 5 of the top 5 could use a LT. :tsk:

I guess thats good for other positions falling back.

This draft is deep at OTs worth between the 15-30 slots...Williams, Clady, Otah, Cherilus, etc. There isn't that 1 guaranteed stud (not even Long), but a lot of 2nd tier talent. I don't think Shanny goes OT at #12, but if he does...gimme Otah.

We get him and Williams and we could be the Denverbilt Broncos instead of the Denver Browncos...I know it's a weak attempt, but you also have to admit that if we drafted em both to go w/ Cutty...SOMEONE would have come up with it.

Bennett would be a good #2 receiver in the NFL. It actually wouldn't be a bad pick up, especially if you consider the chemistry that Cutler and Bennett have and from the sounds of it Marshall and Bennett are ok with the idea of working together.

Jay Cutler throws to Bennett at Pro Day and IN the Pro's.

I like the sound of it.

The Broncs sure have a short history of offseason "themes"
2 years ago: Denver Browncos
Last year: Denver Gators
This year: Denverbilt (as Smilin said)?

It would be interesting to see if there is a "theme" this offseason.

IMHO, if we took him earlier than he was fore casted, I wouldnt be mad. There is far more upside drafting this kid for us, then any other team in the league. You know Cutler wants this kid to succeed, and he wants Cutler to succeed.

He is ok. Based on how he runs he is probably a mid to late 2nd rounder/3rd rounder. He is a willing blocker, very good route runner, and above average hands. He is average to above average after the catch. He doesn't really have any weaknesses, but he isn't amazing at anything either, except maybe his route running.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the story Denver's website. While it would be a good choice with the chemestry allready there between the two, however it says he played slot in college and we've got Stokley there. On the other side of the coin, we do need to grab some solid guys on defense.

The way Shanahan thinks you never know what will happen.

Bennet's bio

Analysis
Positives: Well-built athlete for the position. ... Good overall musculature with a proportionate build throughout. ... Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Good burst in and out of his routes. ... Smart receiver who varies his speed and use head and shoulder fakes to help create separation from defenders -- even those with more natural athleticism. ... Secure hands for the reception and will body-catch, when needed, if he anticipates a big hit. ... Not afraid to go over the middle. ... Good vision, acceleration, and strength in fighting through tackles to generate positive RAC yardage.

Negatives: Lacks elite overall athleticism and has only moderate deep speed. ... Has been the centerpiece of the Vanderbilt passing attack throughout his career, helping pad his statistics.
